Chapter 4 - The Reckoning of CelesteIn a sunlit conservatory situated within a secluded estate high in the hills above Greybridge, Celeste Ardan sat nervously on the edge of a velvet armchair. She was wearing a soft, beige maternity dress, her hands trembling violently around a porcelain teacup.

Standing around the room were three armed female security personnel operating under Lucas’s strict command. But the person who terrified Celeste the most was sitting directly across from her.

Helena Valente was dressed in an elegant cream-colored silk suit, her silver-blond hair perfectly styled, her demeanor as serene and unbothered as a queen receiving a guest in her palace.

"Why am I here?" Celeste stammered, her voice lacking any of the theatrical arrogance she had displayed in the hotel ballroom four days ago. "If you're going to hurt me... if you're going to get revenge for... for what I did... just do it! Stop playing these mind games with me!"

Helena set her cup down softly on the glass table and looked at the young woman with a quiet, profound sense of pity.

"If I wanted to hurt you, Celeste," Helena said gently, "I would have simply let Roman’s security team find you at your apartment two nights ago. Do you know what Vicenzo was ordered to do if he captured you?"

Celeste swallowed hard, her eyes wide with fear. "He... Roman loved me! He promised he was going to marry me as soon as he pushed you out of the picture!"

"Roman Valente loves exactly one thing in this world: Roman Valente," Helena stated flatly. "You were a convenient instrument for him—a young, attractive ego boost to make him feel immortal, and a way to secure leverage over your brother, Prosecutor Marcus Vance. And to your brother, you were merely a biological microphone used to provoke a scandal."

Tears began to spill down Celeste’s cheeks, washing away the heavy makeup she wore. "Marcus told me... he told me that if I publicly confronted you, Roman would be forced to protect me and acknowledge the baby. He said it was the only way to guarantee my child's financial future!"

"Your brother used your desperation, and Roman used your foolishness," Helena said calmly. "Neither of them cared whether you or that innocent child survived the aftermath. You struck me in front of four hundred people because you thought you were taking my place. But tell me, child... do you actually want his place?"

Helena gestured to a tablet computer resting on the table. She slid it toward Celeste.

On the screen was a live video feed of Valente Tower. Federal agents, wearing blue jackets with glowing gold letters, were marching through the glass doors, carrying out boxes of seized corporate files and electronic servers. In the center of the screen, handcuffs were being clicked around Roman Valente’s wrists as news helicopters buzzed overhead like flies over a corpse.

Celeste stared at the screen, her breath hitching in her throat. "He's... he's arrested?"

"He is facing thirty years in federal prison for wire fraud, money laundering, and illegal racketeering," Helena explained coldly. "His assets are frozen. His reputation is destroyed. The Valente empire no longer exists."

Celeste dropped her head into her hands and began to sob uncontrollably. "I have nothing left... my brother will abandon me now that Roman is ruined... my baby will have a father in prison..."

Helena walked over to the young woman, standing over her. For a long moment, the room was silent except for Celeste's desperate weeping.

Then, Helena did something that shocked everyone in the room—including Lucas, who was watching from the doorway.

Helena reached down, pulled a silk handkerchief from her pocket, and gently wiped the tears from Celeste’s face.

"Listen to me very carefully, Celeste," Helena said, her voice firm, clear, and unexpectedly maternal. "You committed a grave, disrespectful insult against me. You thought you could walk into my home and steal a life I spent decades maintaining. Under normal circumstances, I would have destroyed you without a second thought."

Celeste looked up into Helena’s steady, piercing eyes, terrified.

"However," Helena continued, "that baby inside you carries no sin. It did not choose Roman as a father, nor did it choose a foolish girl for a mother. I will not allow a child of the Valente bloodline to be born in a prison ward or abandoned to the system."

"What... what are you saying?" Celeste asked, her voice barely a whisper.

"I am offering you a choice," Helena declared. "You will sign a full, legally binding affidavit detailing every single illegal asset Roman set up under your name. You will cooperate fully with Gabriel in court to clean up the corporate estate. In exchange, I will establish an irrevocable trust fund in that child's name—enough to ensure he receives the finest education, housing, and medical care for the rest of his life."

Celeste stared at Helena in absolute disbelief. "You... you would do that for my baby? After I struck you?"

"I am doing it because I am a mother," Helena said, her voice echoing with absolute authority. "And unlike my husband, I do not abandon my responsibility when the weather turns stormy. But mark my words, Celeste: if you ever step out of line again, or if you ever attempt to use that child for clout or leverage, I will strip you of everything and leave you with nothing. Do you understand me?"

Celeste nodded frantically, tears streaming down her face. "Yes! Yes, I understand! Thank you... I am so sorry... I am so, so sorry, Mrs. Valente!"

"It is Mrs. Marlo now," Helena corrected smoothly, turning toward the door where her three sons stood waiting for her, their faces filled with unyielding respect for the matriarch who had just won a war without firing a single shot.
