Chapter 3 - The Mafia Boss Discovered His Blonde Maid Was His Cousin—But a Hidden Birth Certificate Proved Someone Had Rewritten Their Family HistoryThe word cousin echoed through Ethan Carter's mind.

He stood beside Emily's hospital bed, staring at the photograph Daniel had brought him.

Margaret Bennett.

His father's younger sister.

A woman Ethan barely remembered.

He had been told she died overseas when he was a child.

Now Daniel claimed Margaret had married Samuel Bennett and given birth to Emily.

Ethan looked at the young woman sleeping beneath the white hospital sheets.

He remembered the way she'd smiled when he thanked her for helping the household staff.

The quiet conversations they'd shared in the kitchen.

The strange connection he'd felt whenever she entered a room.

And the kiss he'd almost given her once, months earlier, after finding her crying in the garden.

He stepped backward.

"What exactly do we know?" he asked.

Daniel looked down at the documents.

"Margaret Carter married Samuel Bennett twenty-six years ago. Emily was born two years later."

"Are you certain Margaret was my father's sister?"

"That's what the records say."

Ethan's expression hardened.

"Records can be forged."

Daniel nodded.

"Especially in this family."

Ethan looked at Emily again.

"Then verify everything."

"How?"

"Birth certificates. Marriage records. Hospital files. Anything that wasn't created or controlled by my father."

Daniel hesitated.

"Boss, if she really is your cousin—"

"Then she deserves to know."

Ethan's voice was firm.

"And if someone fabricated this, I want to know why."

Emily woke shortly after sunrise.

The first thing she saw was Ethan sitting beside the window.

He had changed into a clean black shirt.

His dark hair was slightly disheveled.

And the tattoos along his forearms were visible where he'd rolled up his sleeves.

He looked exhausted.

"Mr. Carter?"

He turned immediately.

"Emily."

She tried to sit up.

He crossed the room.

"Slowly."

"I'm okay."

"You nearly died."

She looked at him.

"So did you."

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Emily noticed the folder on the bedside table.

"What is that?"

Ethan hesitated.

"Something Daniel found."

She studied his face.

"Is it about my father?"

"Partly."

He handed her the photograph.

Emily stared.

Her father.

Samuel Bennett.

Standing beside Victor Carter.

And her mother.

Margaret.

She touched the image with trembling fingers.

"I've never seen this."

Ethan watched her.

"Your mother was Margaret Carter before she married Samuel?"

Emily looked up.

"Yes."

"Did she ever tell you about her family?"

"Not much."

"Why?"

Emily swallowed.

"She said they were dangerous people."

Ethan felt a chill.

"Did she ever mention Victor Carter?"

Emily nodded.

"She said he was a man who destroyed everything he touched."

Ethan closed his eyes briefly.

"Emily, Daniel found records suggesting your mother was Victor's younger sister."

Emily stared at him.

"What?"

"If that's true, we're related."

She looked down at the photograph.

Then shook her head.

"No."

"Emily—"

"No, that's impossible."

"Why?"

Her voice trembled.

"Because my mother told me Victor Carter wasn't her brother."

Ethan went still.

"What did she say?"

Emily looked directly at him.

"She said Victor stole the Carter name."

Silence filled the room.

Ethan stared at her.

"What does that mean?"

Emily swallowed.

"I don't know. She never explained."

He looked at the photograph again.

A stolen name.

A false death.

A hidden brother.

And now a family relationship that might not be real.

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Someone has been rewriting our history."

Emily nodded slowly.

"And I think it started long before Noah disappeared."

By noon, Daniel had uncovered the first contradiction.

Margaret Carter's birth certificate had been issued when she was twelve years old.

Not at birth.

The document listed Victor Carter's parents as her parents.

But the hospital named on the certificate had closed before Margaret was supposedly born.

Ethan stared at the report.

"That's impossible."

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

He placed another document on the desk.

"This is Margaret's original school enrollment record. Her surname was not Carter."

Ethan read the name.

MARGARET HOLLOWAY.

Emily leaned forward.

"Holloway?"

Daniel nodded.

"She was adopted by the Carter family when she was twelve."

Ethan exhaled.

"So she wasn't Victor's biological sister."

"Correct."

Emily looked between them.

"Then why did my mother say Victor stole the Carter name?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Because there's another problem."

He placed a third document on the desk.

Victor Carter's original birth certificate.

The surname had been altered.

The original name was still faintly visible beneath the ink.

VICTOR MORETTI.

Ethan stared.

"Moretti?"

Daniel nodded.

"Your father was born Victor Moretti. He changed his name when he married into the Carter family."

Ethan frowned.

"My mother was born a Carter?"

"Yes."

The room fell silent.

Ethan's mother, Isabella Carter, had died when he was seventeen.

He remembered her as a gentle woman who loved music and hated the violence surrounding the family.

He had never known that the Carter name came from her.

Daniel continued.

"Victor married Isabella and took her surname. Later, he adopted Margaret Holloway as his sister for legal purposes."

Emily looked confused.

"Why would he do that?"

"To control an inheritance."

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"What inheritance?"

Daniel placed a final document on the desk.

A trust agreement.

Signed thirty years earlier.

The Carter family had owned a substantial shipping fortune before Victor entered the picture.

The trust required that certain assets remain within the Carter bloodline.

Victor had married Isabella.

Then used forged records and legal arrangements to gain control over the estate.

Emily looked at Ethan.

"So my mother wasn't your biological aunt."

"No."

"And we're not cousins."

"Not by blood."

Ethan felt relief.

Then immediately hated himself for feeling it.

There were far more important things happening.

Noah was missing.

People had died.

And his father might still be alive.

But he couldn't deny that the possibility of being related to Emily had unsettled him more than he wanted to admit.

Emily noticed his expression.

"What?"

"Nothing."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Ethan."

He looked at her.

It was the first time she'd said his name without the formal title.

And he liked it far too much.

"You're not going to call me Mr. Carter anymore?"

She blushed.

"I forgot."

"Don't apologize."

For a brief moment, the tension between them softened.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

"Boss."

Ethan turned.

"What?"

"We found Vanessa."

Vanessa Sinclair was hiding in a private penthouse overlooking Central Park.

When Ethan entered, she was sitting beside the window in a silk robe.

Her eyes were swollen from crying.

A half-empty glass of champagne stood on the table.

She looked up.

"Ethan."

He stopped several feet away.

"Where's Noah?"

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Don't lie to me."

"I'm not lying."

Ethan placed the DNA report on the table.

"You hid my brother for four years."

Vanessa began crying.

"I didn't hide him."

Ethan stared.

"What?"

She looked down.

"My father did."

"Explain."

Vanessa took a trembling breath.

"Four years ago, I met Noah at a private medical facility in Switzerland."

Ethan's expression hardened.

"Why was he there?"

"He was recovering from an injury."

"What injury?"

Vanessa hesitated.

"He had been held captive."

Ethan felt sick.

"By whom?"

"My father."

The words hung between them.

Vanessa continued.

"Richard told me Noah was dangerous. He said Noah had stolen information from Victor Carter and threatened to destroy several powerful families."

Ethan said nothing.

"I believed him."

"Then what happened?"

Vanessa looked away.

"I fell in love with Noah."

Ethan stared.

For a moment, he couldn't speak.

"You loved my brother?"

She nodded.

"We were together for almost a year."

"And Oliver?"

"He's our son."

Ethan looked at the DNA report.

"Why did you tell everyone he was your nephew?"

"Because my father threatened to take him away."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Where is Oliver now?"

Vanessa began crying harder.

"Richard took him yesterday."

Ethan went still.

"What?"

"He said if I told you the truth, I'd never see my son again."

Ethan looked at her.

"Why did you agree to marry me?"

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Because Richard ordered me to."

"Why?"

"He wanted control of the Carter shipping companies."

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"So the engagement was a business transaction."

"Yes."

"And you went along with it."

Vanessa nodded.

"I'm sorry."

Ethan looked away.

He had believed she cared for him.

Not deeply, perhaps.

But enough to build a marriage.

Now he understood that every dinner, every kiss, every promise had been part of someone else's plan.

"Did Noah know you were engaged to me?"

Vanessa shook her head.

"No. He thought you were responsible for his disappearance."

Ethan closed his eyes.

"Because someone showed him a document with my signature."

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes."

"Who?"

She hesitated.

Then whispered, "Victor."

Ethan opened his eyes.

"My father?"

Vanessa nodded.

"Victor Carter is alive."

The room became unbearably quiet.

Ethan stared at Vanessa.

"Say that again."

"Your father is alive."

"No."

"Ethan—"

"I watched them bury him."

Vanessa shook her head.

"You watched them bury a coffin."

Ethan felt cold.

She continued.

"Victor faked his death because federal investigators were closing in on his financial operations. Richard helped him disappear."

Ethan's hands curled into fists.

"Where is he?"

"I don't know."

"Vanessa."

"I swear."

She looked at him desperately.

"But I know something else."

Ethan waited.

"Victor doesn't want Noah dead."

"Then what does he want?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"He wants Noah to sign over the Carter family trust."

Ethan frowned.

"Why Noah?"

"Because your mother left something in his name."

Ethan stared.

"What?"

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"A private trust containing the original Carter fortune. Victor couldn't access it without Noah's authorization."

Ethan felt the pieces shifting.

His father's obsession with control.

Noah's disappearance.

The forged authorization.

The engagement.

The DNA report.

All connected to money.

And something worse.

Vanessa continued.

"Your father has been trying to force Noah to sign for years."

"Why hasn't Noah done it?"

"Because he knows what Victor plans to use the money for."

Ethan's voice dropped.

"What?"

Vanessa hesitated.

Then whispered:

"To buy the evidence that could send him to prison."

Ethan stared.

"What evidence?"

Vanessa looked toward the door.

"Samuel Bennett's files."

Back at the mansion, Emily stood in her small bedroom holding a photograph of her parents.

She had spent years believing her father died because he discovered financial crimes.

Now she knew those crimes were connected to a much larger conspiracy.

Her mother had been adopted into the Carter family.

Victor had stolen the family name.

Noah had discovered the truth.

And Samuel Bennett had collected evidence powerful enough to threaten everyone involved.

Emily opened the bottom drawer of her dresser.

Beneath a stack of folded sweaters lay a small metal box.

Inside was a key.

A faded photograph.

And a handwritten letter from her father.

She had read the letter hundreds of times.

But tonight, one sentence suddenly meant something different.

If anything happens to me, find the place where Isabella kept her music.

Isabella.

Ethan's mother.

Emily stared at the words.

She had always assumed Isabella was someone her father knew through work.

Now she understood.

Isabella Carter had helped Samuel Bennett.

Emily stood.

She knew exactly where Isabella's music room was.

It was on the mansion's third floor.

A room Ethan had kept locked since his mother's death.

Emily took the key.

Then hurried upstairs.

The music room smelled of old wood and dust.

A grand piano stood beneath a tall window.

Sheet music filled the shelves.

Portraits of Isabella Carter hung along the walls.

Emily crossed toward the piano.

Her father had written:

Find the place where Isabella kept her music.

She examined the shelves.

Nothing.

Then the piano.

She opened the lid.

Still nothing.

Finally, she noticed a small brass plate beneath the keyboard.

A keyhole.

Her heart raced.

She inserted the key.

It fit.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside lay a leather-bound notebook.

Emily lifted it carefully.

The first page contained a handwritten message.

For Ethan and Noah, when they are old enough to know the truth.

Emily covered her mouth.

She turned the page.

And froze.

There was a photograph.

Isabella Carter.

Samuel Bennett.

Margaret Holloway.

And a fourth person.

A man Emily recognized instantly.

Richard Sinclair.

Beneath the photograph, Isabella had written:

If Victor discovers what we know, none of us will survive.

Emily's hands began shaking.

She turned another page.

A list of names.

Bank accounts.

Dates.

Then one final sentence.

The real Carter heir is not the man everyone believes.

Emily stared.

Before she could read further, the door creaked behind her.

She turned.

Marco stood in the doorway.

A gun in his hand.

"Hello, Emily."

Her blood ran cold.

Marco smiled.

May you like

"I was wondering when you'd finally find that notebook."

End of Chapter 3.
