Chapter 5 - The Mafia Boss Believed His Blonde Maid Was His Long-Lost Sister—Until a Secret DNA Test Exposed the Cruelest Lie His Father Had Ever ToldEthan Carter had faced armed enemies without flinching.

He had survived assassination attempts.

He had buried men he loved.

He had watched powerful rivals surrender rather than challenge him.

But nothing had prepared him for the moment he looked at Emily Bennett and wondered whether she was his sister.

The music room was silent.

The old piano stood beside the window.

His mother's notebook lay open on the desk.

And Emily held a silver crescent necklace in her trembling hand.

"Emily," Ethan whispered.

She looked at him.

"Yes?"

"Did your mother ever tell you where that necklace came from?"

Emily shook her head.

"She said it belonged to someone who loved me."

Ethan felt sick.

He remembered Isabella Carter wearing a matching pendant when he was a child.

He remembered her telling him that one day, when he was older, he would understand why she kept two.

And he remembered a tiny pink blanket in his mother's bedroom.

A blanket that disappeared after Isabella returned from the hospital.

Ethan had been ten years old.

Noah had been six.

Their mother had been pregnant.

Then suddenly, she wasn't.

Victor told them the baby had died.

No funeral.

No grave.

No explanation.

Just silence.

Ethan looked at the birth certificate.

ELIZABETH CARTER.

Born twenty-four years earlier.

Emily was twenty-four.

Her birthday matched the date.

Her necklace matched the one Isabella had owned.

And her mother had been connected to the Carter family.

It was too much to ignore.

Emily slowly lowered the pendant.

"You're thinking I'm Elizabeth."

Ethan said nothing.

She looked at him.

"Your sister."

He closed his eyes.

"I don't know."

Emily stepped backward.

For months, she had felt something changing between them.

She had tried to ignore it.

The way Ethan watched her when she entered a room.

The way his voice softened when he spoke to her.

The way her heart raced whenever he stood close.

Now those feelings seemed suddenly terrifying.

"We need to know," she whispered.

Ethan opened his eyes.

"Yes."

The following morning, Ethan arranged for independent DNA testing.

Not through the Carter family doctors.

Not through the private laboratory Vanessa had used.

And not through anyone connected to Richard Sinclair.

He contacted a medical genetics specialist through an outside attorney.

The samples were collected separately, with identity verification and documented handling.

Emily sat beside him in the clinic's waiting room.

Neither spoke for several minutes.

Finally, she whispered, "What happens if it's true?"

Ethan looked at her.

"Then we deal with it."

She nodded.

"And if it isn't?"

He hesitated.

Then answered honestly.

"I don't know."

Emily looked down.

"Neither do I."

For the first time, Ethan understood that discovering the truth might not make anything easier.

It might simply change the kind of pain they had to face.

While they waited for the results, Daniel continued investigating Isabella's notebook.

The birth certificate had been issued by a private hospital in Connecticut.

The hospital closed eighteen years earlier.

Its records had been transferred to a medical archive.

Daniel obtained copies through the attorney.

And discovered something strange.

Elizabeth Carter had not died.

Her birth record showed that she was transferred to another facility three days after delivery.

But the receiving hospital had no record of her arrival.

The transfer was authorized by Victor Carter.

Ethan stared at the document.

"He took her."

Daniel nodded.

"That's what it looks like."

Emily swallowed.

"Why?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Because Isabella had changed the family trust."

Ethan looked up.

"What?"

Daniel placed another document on the desk.

"Before Elizabeth was born, Isabella amended the trust so that her children would inherit equal shares of the Carter estate."

Ethan frowned.

"So?"

"Victor couldn't control the assets without the children's authorization once they reached adulthood."

Emily looked at the papers.

"And Elizabeth would have had a share."

"Yes."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Then Victor made her disappear."

Daniel nodded.

"Possibly."

Ethan stood.

"Find her."

Daniel looked at him.

"Boss, if Emily is Elizabeth—"

"Then we'll know soon."

Ethan's voice hardened.

"But if she isn't, my sister is still out there."

That afternoon, Vanessa called.

Ethan almost ignored the number.

Then he remembered Oliver.

He answered.

"Where is your son?"

Vanessa's voice trembled.

"I don't know."

"Have you heard from Richard?"

"No."

"Then why are you calling?"

She began crying.

"Because I found something."

Ethan closed his eyes.

"What?"

"A photograph of Noah."

His heart pounded.

"Where?"

"At my father's office."

"Is it recent?"

"Yes."

Ethan stood.

"Send it."

A moment later, the photograph appeared.

Noah sat in a chair inside a brightly lit room.

He looked exhausted.

But alive.

Beside him stood a little boy.

Oliver.

Ethan stared.

His brother.

And his nephew.

Together.

Vanessa whispered, "Richard is using Oliver to control Noah."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Where was the photograph taken?"

"I don't know."

"Look at the background."

Vanessa hesitated.

"There's a window."

"What can you see?"

"A river."

Ethan stared at the image.

Then noticed something.

A distinctive red crane outside the window.

He knew that crane.

It belonged to Carter Maritime's old private terminal in Brooklyn.

Ethan's expression hardened.

"I know where they are."

At 6:15 p.m., Ethan stood inside Daniel's office.

A map of the Brooklyn terminal covered the desk.

Emily entered quietly.

"You're going after Noah."

Ethan looked up.

"Yes."

She approached.

"Then I'm coming."

"No."

"Ethan—"

"Emily, we don't even know whether we're related."

She stopped.

He immediately regretted the words.

He softened his voice.

"I didn't mean it like that."

She looked away.

"I know."

He stepped closer.

"You're important to me."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"That's what makes this so hard."

Ethan said nothing.

She continued.

"I came here to find out what happened to my father. Then I discovered your family was involved. Then I learned your brother was alive. And now I don't even know who I am."

Ethan gently took her hand.

"You're Emily Bennett."

She looked at him.

"Whatever those results say, that doesn't change."

A tear slipped down her cheek.

He wiped it away.

For a moment, they stood close enough to hear each other's breathing.

Then Ethan stepped back.

He would not let his feelings cloud his judgment while their identities remained uncertain.

"Stay with Daniel," he said.

Emily shook her head.

"I know the terminal's old maintenance routes. My father took me there when I was a child."

Ethan frowned.

"Why?"

"Because he worked there."

She looked at the map.

"And because there's a tunnel beneath the eastern loading dock."

Daniel entered.

"She's right."

Ethan turned.

Daniel placed a blueprint on the desk.

"The tunnel was sealed on the official plans. But maintenance records show it remained accessible."

Ethan looked at Emily.

She raised an eyebrow.

"Still think I should stay home?"

Despite everything, he almost smiled.

"You're impossible."

"That's what my father used to say."

The rescue operation began after dark.

Daniel coordinated with a small team of trusted security officers and outside investigators.

Ethan refused to repeat the mistake he'd made at the abandoned warehouse.

This time, he wanted witnesses.

Evidence.

And a way to bring Noah and Oliver out alive.

Emily remained at the mobile command vehicle, helping identify the terminal's old service routes.

Ethan entered through a maintenance corridor.

The air smelled of salt water and diesel.

At the end of the passage, he heard voices.

One belonged to Richard Sinclair.

"Sign the documents, Noah."

Another voice answered.

"No."

Ethan froze.

Noah.

His brother.

Alive.

Richard spoke again.

"Your son is sitting right there."

Ethan's blood ran cold.

Noah's voice cracked.

"Leave Oliver out of this."

"Then sign."

Ethan moved closer.

Through a narrow window, he saw them.

Noah sat at a metal table.

His wrists were free.

But two armed men stood nearby.

Oliver sat in a chair beside him, clutching a stuffed rabbit.

The little boy looked frightened.

Richard stood across from them holding a folder.

Ethan's jaw tightened.

He spoke quietly into his radio.

"I have eyes on Noah and Oliver."

Daniel answered.

"Hold position. The team is moving."

Ethan watched Richard lean toward Noah.

"Your brother isn't coming."

Noah looked up.

"You don't know Ethan."

Richard laughed.

"I know exactly what kind of man he is."

Noah's expression hardened.

"No. You know what my father told you."

Richard stopped smiling.

Ethan felt something shift inside him.

For eleven years, Noah had believed Ethan betrayed him.

But now, perhaps, he was beginning to question that lie.

Richard slammed the folder onto the table.

"Sign!"

Noah shook his head.

"No."

Richard reached toward Oliver.

The little boy began crying.

"Daddy!"

Ethan moved.

He opened the door.

"Take your hands off him."

Every head turned.

Noah froze.

"Ethan?"

Richard stepped backward.

"How did you get in here?"

Ethan ignored him.

His eyes were fixed on Noah.

For eleven years, he had imagined this moment.

He had dreamed of hearing his brother's voice again.

Now Noah stood only a few feet away.

Older.

Thinner.

Scarred.

But alive.

"Noah," Ethan whispered.

His brother stared.

"You came."

Ethan swallowed.

"Of course I came."

Richard reached toward his jacket.

Ethan's voice turned cold.

"Don't."

The armed men hesitated.

Then Daniel's team entered from the opposite door.

"Hands where we can see them!"

The guards surrendered.

Richard backed toward the wall.

"This is a mistake!"

Ethan looked at him.

"No."

He stepped closer.

"This is the first honest thing that's happened in my family in eleven years."

Noah stood slowly.

His eyes remained fixed on Ethan.

"I thought you wanted me dead."

Ethan shook his head.

"Never."

Noah swallowed.

"Victor showed me the order."

"He forged it."

Noah stared.

Ethan continued.

"I signed shipping papers that night. I didn't know what he attached to them."

Noah's eyes filled with tears.

"For eleven years..."

Ethan stepped closer.

"I'm sorry."

Noah shook his head.

"You didn't know."

"I should have."

"No."

Noah's voice broke.

"You were twenty-three. You trusted our father."

Ethan closed his eyes.

Then Noah crossed the room.

And embraced him.

For a moment, Ethan couldn't move.

Then he wrapped his arms around his brother.

Hard.

As though Noah might disappear again.

"I'm sorry," Ethan whispered.

Noah held him tighter.

"I know."

Oliver watched them.

Then tugged Noah's sleeve.

"Daddy?"

Noah stepped back.

He knelt beside the little boy.

"Oliver, this is your uncle Ethan."

The child looked up.

"Uncle?"

Ethan crouched.

"Hi, buddy."

Oliver studied his tattoos.

"Are those dragons?"

Ethan laughed through tears.

"Some of them."

Oliver smiled.

And Ethan felt something inside him begin to heal.

At 11:32 p.m., Ethan returned to the mansion with Noah and Oliver.

Emily waited in the entrance hall.

When she saw Noah, she covered her mouth.

The brothers looked so alike.

Same gray eyes.

Same strong jaw.

Same dark hair.

But Noah's expression was softer.

More cautious.

He approached Emily.

"You're the maid."

She nodded.

"Emily Bennett."

Noah stared.

Then his expression changed.

"Bennett?"

Emily frowned.

"Yes."

Noah stepped closer.

"Samuel Bennett's daughter?"

Her heart stopped.

"You knew my father?"

Noah nodded.

"He saved my life."

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"What?"

Noah looked at Ethan.

"Samuel was the one who helped me escape the first time."

Ethan stared.

"Escape?"

Noah nodded.

"Victor had me locked inside a private facility. Samuel found out and helped me get out."

Emily began crying.

"Then why did my father disappear?"

Noah's expression darkened.

"Because Victor discovered what he'd done."

Emily covered her mouth.

Noah continued.

"Samuel hid me for almost six months. He was collecting evidence. He planned to expose everything."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"What happened?"

Noah looked down.

"Victor found us."

Emily whispered, "And killed my father."

Noah's eyes filled with tears.

"I'm sorry."

She shook her head.

"No."

Her voice broke.

"No, you don't have to apologize."

Noah looked at her.

"Your father was a good man."

Emily began sobbing.

For years, she had wondered whether Samuel died because he made a mistake.

Now she knew.

He died trying to save someone.

Ethan moved toward her.

Then stopped.

The uncertainty about their relationship remained.

He didn't know whether he had the right to comfort her the way he wanted.

Emily looked up.

And walked into his arms.

He held her carefully.

Noah watched them.

Then glanced at Daniel.

"What's going on?"

Daniel hesitated.

"It's complicated."

Noah raised an eyebrow.

"Apparently everything in this family is."

The DNA results arrived the following morning.

Ethan sat beside Emily in the library.

Daniel stood near the door.

Noah waited by the window.

The sealed report lay on the desk.

Emily stared at it.

"I can't open it."

Ethan looked at her.

"Do you want me to?"

She nodded.

He broke the seal.

Then unfolded the document.

His eyes moved across the first page.

Then the second.

Emily watched his expression.

"Ethan?"

He said nothing.

Her heart pounded.

"Please."

He slowly lowered the paper.

And looked at her.

"Emily."

Her lips trembled.

"Are we related?"

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

She stopped breathing.

"What?"

"The test found no biological relationship consistent with siblings or close cousins."

Emily covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

Ethan continued.

"The birth certificate was part of a false identity trail."

Noah frowned.

"Then who is Elizabeth Carter?"

Daniel stepped forward.

"We found her."

Everyone turned.

Ethan stared.

"What?"

Daniel placed a photograph on the desk.

A young woman with dark hair and gray eyes stood outside a small house.

She looked remarkably like Isabella Carter.

"Her name is Elizabeth Carter," Daniel said.

"She's alive."

Ethan slowly stood.

"Where?"

Daniel hesitated.

"She lives in Boston."

Emily stared at the photograph.

Then at Ethan.

For the first time, the mystery of her identity seemed to be ending.

But another mystery was beginning.

Ethan looked at Daniel.

"Why did my father hide her?"

Daniel's expression darkened.

"Because Elizabeth knows where Victor is."

Ethan went still.

"And?"

Daniel swallowed.

"She says your father isn't hiding anymore."

Noah stepped forward.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel looked at the brothers.

"Victor Carter has returned to New York."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Where is he?"

Daniel hesitated.

Then answered.

"At the Carter family cemetery."

Silence filled the room.

Ethan stared.

Daniel continued.

May you like

"He's standing beside his own grave."

"And he's waiting for you."
