Chapter 4 - The Ultimate Rebuilding and the Shadows of the PastSix months passed, transforming the bitter winter into a vibrant, blooming spring.

My life had become unrecognizable from the lonely, heartbroken waitress who had walked out of the Metropolitan Club years ago. Now, backed by controlling shares in Moretti Enterprises and surrounded by a loyal team of professionals who respected my sharp business acumen, I was actively spearheading the philanthropic foundation arm of the corporation, focusing on providing medical and financial support to single mothers and underprivileged families across Chicago.
Vincent remained true to his word. He was a constant, steady presence in Chloe’s life—attentive, gentle, and utterly devoted—yet he never crossed boundaries, never pressured me for romance, and respected every limit I established.
Our relationship had evolved from bitter ex-spouses to cautious co-parents, and slowly, into something resembling deep, abiding respect.
However, high society never truly forgets a scandal, and old enemies rarely go down without a final, desperate strike.
One afternoon, while attending a high-profile charity auction downtown alongside Vincent, we were cornered near the private lounge by a desperate, disheveled figure.
It was Sophia Reynolds.
She looked a shadow of her former self, her designer clothes rumpled, her eyes wild with alcohol and lingering resentment.
“Vincent!” she hissed, stepping into our path and blocking the hallway. “You threw me away for her? For a nobody from Queens who trapped you with a bastard baby?”
Vincent stepped in front of me instantly, his frame shielding me and Chloe (who was safely at home with her nanny, though he didn't need Sophia to know that). His voice dropped to a terrifying, arctic register.
“Watch your mouth, Sophia. Security is already on their way. If you value your freedom, I suggest you turn around and walk out that door right now.”
Sophia laughed hysterically, tears of rage spilling down her cheeks.
“You think you’ve won, don’t you? Both of you! You think Margaret is gone forever? She’s coming back, Vincent! The family board is meeting next week to reinstate her authority, and the first thing she’s going to do is strip your little gold-digger of every single share she—”
Before Sophia could finish her threat, a pair of heavy security guards grabbed her firmly by both arms, lifting her off her feet.
Simultaneously, a second team of men in dark suits stepped forward—federal marshals accompanied by corporate investigators.
“Sophia Reynolds?” the lead investigator asked calmly, flashing a badge. “You are being placed under arrest for securities fraud, corporate espionage, and illegal insider trading linked to your family’s firm attempts to sabotage Moretti Enterprises.”
Sophia’s face drained of all color as the handcuffs clicked into place around her wrists. She screamed curses as she was dragged down the marble corridor, her social reign in New York ending in absolute disgrace.
Vincent watched her go without a shred of emotion, then turned to me, his gaze softening instantly.
“Are you alright?” he asked, his hand gently resting on my shoulder.

I looked up at him, feeling completely safe, completely secure, and entirely unshakable.
“I’ve never been better, Vincent,” I replied with a confident smile. “Let’s go home.”
