Chapter 3 - The Waitress’s Secret Reward, the Eradication of the Vitiello Threat, and the Underworld King’s New QueenMinutes later, Norah Hayes was escorted out of the stainless-steel kitchen by two heavily armed enforcers. Her hands trembled, her apron was slightly stained with flour, and her eyes were wide with unadulterated fear as she stepped into the blood-dusted dining room.

She had expected to be interrogated, blamed, or silenced for interfering in syndicate business.
Instead, Vincent Russo stood alone beside the center table, the bodies of the hitmen already cleared away by his efficient cleanup crew. He watched her approach with an intense, unblinking focus that made her breath catch in her throat.
“Miss Hayes,” Vincent said, his voice dropping into a deep, steady baritone.
“Mr. Russo,” Norah whispered, her knees shaking. “I... I only wrote the note because—because my brother Liam owes money to the Vitiellos, and if you died, they would have used him—!”
“Your brother’s debt has been settled in full,” Vincent interrupted smoothly, holding up a hand to stop her frantic explanation. “The Vitiello ledger containing Liam’s name was recovered from Tommy Lombardi’s jacket five minutes ago. It has been permanently burned.”
Norah stared at him, stunned into absolute silence. “Settled? You... you wiped his debt?”
“You saved my life tonight, Norah,” Vincent stated, walking slowly around the table until he stood just two feet away from her. “In my world, loyalty of that magnitude is exceptionally rare. It is a debt that requires absolute, permanent balancing.”
He reached into his breast pocket, withdrew a heavy, platinum-encased keycard, and placed it gently onto the silver serving tray she was still clutching in her hands.
“What is this?” Norah asked, looking down at the key.
“It is the deed and executive management contract for Laura,” Vincent explained calmly. “The previous owner has elected to retire to Florida effective immediately. Furthermore, a permanent medical trust fund has been established under your name at Columbia Presbyterian to cover all remaining expenses for your mother’s treatments and your brother’s rehabilitation.”
Tears hot and unbidden spilled over Norah’s eyelashes. For years, she had worked double shifts, dodging creditors, terrified of the city’s dark edges, living from paycheck to paycheck just to keep her family from drowning.
In a single night, the most feared underworld king in New York had rewritten her entire existence.
“I don't know how to thank you,” Norah whispered, her voice shaking with emotion. “I’m just a waitress... I don't know how to run a Michelin-starred restaurant.”
“You are observant, courageous, and entirely incorruptible,” Vincent corrected, his dark eyes burning with a rare, absolute warmth. “Those are the exact qualities I look for in my most trusted partners. Running a restaurant will be simple by comparison.”
He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently touching her chin, tilting her face upward.
“Unless, of course, you would prefer a different position,” Vincent murmured, his voice dropping into a husky, hypnotic register. “Say... managing the executive logistics of the entire Russo syndicate by my side?”
Norah let out a soft, brilliant laugh through her tears, realizing the terrifying, beautiful storm she had stepped into. She placed her hand over his warm palm.
“Only if I get to review the security detail, Mr. Russo,” she teased softly.
