Chapter 3 - The Underground Trap—When a Rival Syndicate Strikes, Mave’s Hidden Past and Brutus’s Loyalty Save the Day

Two weeks had passed since the night at the Copper Anchor, and Mave's life had turned upside down.
She hadn't taken Gallagher's offer immediately—she spent three days agonizing over it, paying off her mother's hospital bills and clearing her overdue rent. But the exhaustion of fourteen-hour shifts and Arthur's constant screaming finally broke her resolve. When she walked into Gallagher's midtown headquarters on a rainy Tuesday morning, she wasn't looking for a handout; she was looking for survival.
To her surprise, Gallagher hadn't made her an enforcer or a bodyguard. Instead, he placed her in charge of logistics and sanctuary operations—managing the safehouses and vetting the civilian contractors who handled his organization's legal fronts. Her sharp mind, absolute lack of fear, and cold rationality made her an indispensable asset within days.
And Brutus went everywhere with her.
The 120-pound Cane Corso-pit bull mix had become her shadow. Whenever Mave walked the marble corridors of Gallagher's estate or reviewed ledgers in the back office, the massive beast trotted beside her like a loyal guardian, sleeping outside her temporary quarters every single night.
It was a chilly Friday evening when the hidden threat finally materialized.
Mave was stationed at the downtown shipping warehouse—one of Gallagher's primary import hubs—overseeing a quiet inventory audit while Declan was across town meeting with city officials. Only a skeleton crew of four guards remained in the vast, dim warehouse, surrounded by towering stacks of shipping crates smelling of salt, steel, and diesel.
Without warning, the heavy corrugated metal loading dock doors shuddered with a deafening crash.
Chainsaws whined through the steel lock.
"Ambush!" one of Gallagher's guards shouted, drawing his firearm just as the door blew inward.
A dozen armed men clad in tactical black gear and wearing ski masks swarmed into the warehouse. They weren't low-level thugs; they were professional hitmen belonging to the Petrov Syndicate, Gallagher's fiercest rival in the northern docks. Their guns were raised, silenced pistols glinting under the flickering overhead fluorescent lights.
Gunfire erupted instantly.
Mave dropped flat behind a massive wooden crate loaded with imported Italian tiles as bullets shredded the air above her head, sending a shower of splinters raining down onto her shoulders.
"Secure the perimeter!" shouted a scarred brute leading the Petrov assault squad, stepping over the body of one of Gallagher's fallen guards. "Find the ledger and burn the rest to the ground!"
Mave's heart hammered against her ribs, but her mind remained razor-sharp. She knew the layout of the warehouse better than anyone. There was a reinforced panic room fifty yards away behind the supervisor's office, but to reach it, she had to cross an open aisle currently covered by two armed mercenaries.
Beside her, Brutus stood rigidly, his dark coat bristling. A low, menacing growl rumbled deep within his chest. His yellow eyes locked onto the advancing gunmen, his muscles coiling like steel springs.
"Easy, boy," Mave whispered, sliding her hand into her coat pocket where she kept a heavy steel wrench. "Wait for it..."
The lead mercenary crept closer, his weapon scanning the shadows near the crates. He was only ten feet away.
Mave didn't hesitate. She threw a heavy iron bracket across the room, letting it crash against a row of empty steel drums near the back exit.
The mercenary snapped his head toward the noise, instinctively aiming his weapon in that direction.
"Now!" Mave hissed.
Brutus didn't bark. He exploded.
120 pounds of pure, unbridled muscle launched from the shadows like a furry cannonball. Before the mercenary could pull his trigger, Brutus slammed chest-first into him, driving the heavy man backward into a stack of wooden pallets with bone-crushing force. The man's gun flew from his hand as he hit the concrete, knocked unconscious instantly.
The second mercenary spun around, shouting in shock, and raised his rifle toward the dog.
Mave leaped from her hiding spot, swinging the heavy steel wrench with all her might, smashing it squarely across the mercenary's wrist. He shrieked in agony as bones fractured, dropping his weapon to the floor. Before he could recover, Brutus pivoted, his massive jaws locking onto the man's tactical vest, hoisting him off the ground and tossing him effortlessly into a pile of cardboard boxes.
In less than ten seconds, the two guards guarding the eastern corridor were completely neutralized.
"Move!" Mave yelled, grabbing Brutus by his heavy collar and sprinting toward the reinforced security office.

They barricaded the heavy steel door just as a volley of bullets peppered the exterior wall. Inside the secure room, Mave's fingers flew across the emergency console, activating the automated distress beacon that transmitted a direct encrypted ping to Declan Gallagher's personal phone.
"Hold on, Declan," Mave breathed, her hands steady as she reloaded a dropped magazine she had picked up off the floor. "We're holding the line."
