Chapter 4 - The Ultimate Showdown—Declan Gallagher Unleashes Hell to Save Mave, Revealing the Truth Behind His Mysterious Past

The response time was not measured in minutes; it was measured in seconds.

Ten minutes after Mave’s distress ping blinked across his screen, Declan Gallagher’s convoy of bulletproof black SUVs breached the outer perimeter of the shipping yards like a rolling armored battalion.

Gallagher didn't wait for the vehicles to come to a complete stop. He kicked his door open before the tires stopped spinning, stepping out into the freezing rain with a customized submachine gun gripped in his massive hands. His face was a mask of cold, unmitigated fury—the look of a man whose entire world had just been threatened.

"Kill everyone," Gallagher growled into his radio, his voice flat, icy, and lethal. "Leave no one standing."

Inside the warehouse, the Petrov hit squad realized they were trapped. Hearing the coordinated gunfire erupting outside as Gallagher's enforcers swarmed the building, the remaining mercenaries panicked, trying to fall back toward the loading docks.

But the exits were sealed.

Gallagher moved through the dimly lit aisles like an executioner in a bespoke suit. Every corner he turned resulted in precise, devastating efficiency. His elite detail swept the rafters and perimeter, cutting off escape routes while Gallagher himself marched directly toward the supervisor's office where Mave and Brutus were hoarded.

With a powerful kick, Gallagher shattered the reinforced wooden door of the office.

He raised his weapon, scanning the room—only to lower it instantly when he saw Mave standing near the desk, holding a heavy iron pipe, with Brutus sitting calmly at her side, panting softly.

Gallagher's icy expression melted for a fraction of a second, replaced by a surge of overwhelming relief that he quickly masked beneath a stern glare.

"You're bleeding," Gallagher said, stepping forward and noticing a shallow graze along Mave's forearm where a bullet had clipped her skin.

"It's nothing," Mave said, dropping the pipe and letting out a long, shaky breath as the adrenaline finally began to recede from her veins. "Just a scratch. But your inventory is going to need a lot of paperwork."

Gallagher stepped closer, his pale gray eyes searching her face with an intensity that made her breath catch. He reached out with his large, calloused hand, gently examining her injured arm before pulling a clean linen handkerchief from his breast pocket and wrapping it securely around her wrist.

"You shouldn't have been here tonight, Mave," he said softly, his voice losing its gravelly edge. "This life... it's violent. It's ugly. I brought you in to manage ledgers, not to fight off hit squads."

"And you think I belong behind a desk sipping coffee while people try to kill me?" Mave challenged, looking directly into his eyes without flinching. "I survived three months behind on rent in the worst neighborhood in this city, Declan. I survived Arthur yelling at me while junkies threw whiskey bottles across the room. I don't need protecting. I need a partner who tells me the truth."

Gallagher stared at her, the harsh warehouse lights reflecting off the deep scars on his face. For the first time since she had met him, the dangerous, untouchable mafia boss looked genuinely vulnerable.

"The truth?" Gallagher asked quietly. "The truth is, Mave, from the moment you walked up to my table and stared down my dog without blinking, I knew you were the only person in this city who didn't see a monster when you looked at me. You saw a man. And God help me, I can't afford to lose the only person who sees through the armor."

Before Mave could formulate a reply, Viktor kicked open the inner office door, breathless and bleeding slightly from a graze on his shoulder.

"Boss, the perimeter is secure. Petrov's captain is captured. He's singing like a canary—says Petrov wanted to send a message before the council meeting on Monday."

Gallagher's face hardened back into stone. He turned toward the door, then paused, looking back at Mave.

"Stay here," he instructed gently. "Let me finish this. Then, we're going to have dinner—properly, outside of a restaurant, without anyone trying to shoot us."

Mave offered a tired, genuine smile for the first time all night. "It's a date, boss."
