Chapter 3

Now, backed by her sister Emily—who was a senior partner at a major venture capital firm in Manhattan—Claire orchestrated a quiet, devastating financial strike. Emily’s firm had been quietly buying up distressed commercial debt in the region, including a massive, overdue loan that Vanguard had taken out two years earlier to fund an ambitious luxury hotel project in Boston—a project Daniel had spearheaded entirely with Brooke’s advice. The hotel was currently bleeding money due to structural delays and poor management.
On a rainy Monday morning, Claire walked into the glass-walled boardroom of Vanguard Design Group for the first time in six years. She was wearing a tailored charcoal pantsuit, silver earrings that caught the fluorescent light, and an expression of absolute, unyielding authority. Behind her walked Victoria Vance and two corporate restructuring specialists.
Daniel was sitting at the head of the mahogany table, flanked by his senior partners and a pale, trembling Brooke Miller, who looked like she wanted the floor to open up and swallow her. Daniel stood up so fast his chair screeched against the hardwood. “Claire? What the hell are you doing here? Security—!”
“Sit down, Daniel,” Claire said, her voice cutting across the room with a crisp, chilling finality that silenced every person at the table. She didn't wait for him to obey; she walked straight to the head of the table, pulled out the chair directly opposite him, and sat down.
“Mr. Bennett,” one of the restructuring specialists announced, opening a thick leather binder, “allow us to introduce you to the new majority controlling shareholder of Vanguard Design Group’s primary debt portfolio and voting rights. Meet Ms. Claire Bennett.”
Color drained completely from Daniel’s face. He looked from the documents to Claire, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. “That’s... that’s impossible. Vanguard’s debt is held by MetroTrust—!”
“MetroTrust sold their distressed portfolio to Apex Capital last Friday at a twelve percent discount,” Emily explained smoothly as she stepped into the boardroom carrying a briefcase, having joined them quietly from the hallway. Emily smiled warmly at Daniel’s stunned partners. “And Apex Capital happens to be managed by a board that answers directly to my sister.”
Brooke stood up, her voice shaking. “This is a hostile maneuver! You can’t just—!”
Claire turned her gaze toward Brooke, and the sheer iciness in her eyes made the younger woman instantly step backward. “Miss Miller,” Claire said softly, enunciating every syllable. “You are currently standing in a room belonging to a company you have systematically defrauded through falsified expense reports and unauthorized condo leases. Your employment is terminated effective immediately. Security is waiting outside to escort you from the building.”

Daniel slammed his hands on the table, leaning forward with wild, frantic eyes. “Claire, you can’t do this! We’re still married! You’re destroying everything we built together!”
“We didn't build this together anymore, Daniel,” Claire said, standing up and buttoning her jacket with calm precision. “You built a lie, and you let someone else move into the kitchen. Now, sign the Boston project over to Apex Capital by five o’clock today, or Victoria will initiate bankruptcy proceedings against Vanguard before dinner.” She turned and walked toward the door, leaving Daniel slumped in his chair, utterly defeated by the very woman he had spent years dismissing as ordinary.
