Chapter 5

Hannah was now a high school senior, preparing to apply Ivy League with her head held high and a fierce independence that made Claire immensely proud. They still lived in the Central Park penthouse, though they often spent weekends at their coastal home in Maine, breathing in the salty ocean air and watching the tide roll in without a single regret.

On a rainy Friday evening, Claire stood in her Manhattan kitchen, tying back her hair and pouring herself a glass of crisp white wine. The apartment was quiet, filled with the soft hum of jazz playing from the sound system and the delicious aroma of roasted garlic and herbs drifting from the oven. Hannah was out studying with friends, leaving Claire alone with her thoughts and the glorious peace of a life built entirely on her own terms.

The shelves were perfectly organized, clean, and untouched by anyone who didn't belong there. She reached in, pulled out a sparkling glass, and took a slow, delicious sip of wine.

She smiled to herself, tracing the rim of the glass with her thumb. Daniel had taught her a very painful lesson about trust, but in the process, he had inadvertently unlocked something far more powerful: the realization that she didn't need anyone else to build her an empire. She had always possessed the blueprints; she just needed to walk out the front door to finally start building it.
