Chapter 12

The financial investigation eventually separated wrongdoing into categories.
Some grants were legitimate but poorly disclosed.
Some contracts violated foundation conflict-of-interest policies.
Several consulting arrangements appeared inflated.
A smaller number of transactions showed money cycling back toward people personally connected to Beatrice.
Those became the core of the criminal inquiry.
The amount was significant.
Not cinematic.
Not hundreds of millions.
Enough to matter.
Enough to prove that the governance system had been abused.
Beatrice entered negotiations through counsel.
She still insisted she had protected the foundation.
She argued that keeping influential relatives loyal helped donations and stability.
Rebecca summarized the problem perfectly.
“She keeps confusing what benefited her network with what benefited the institution.”
Vincent knew the pattern.
It was not unique to Beatrice.
His own world had been built on similar logic.
Control described as protection.
Silence described as loyalty.
Dependence described as family.
The difference was that Lucy had forced Vincent to see how those abstractions eventually landed on actual people.
Sometimes on a four-year-old sitting on a ballroom floor.
Vincent began changing more than the foundation.
Family members no longer received automatic jobs in legitimate companies.
Employment required qualifications.
Board seats required independent review.
Charitable grants involving relatives required disclosure.
Nobody liked all of it.
Good.
One cousin accused Vincent of destroying tradition.
Vincent answered:
“Tradition is not an audit exemption.”
Elena heard about the remark and laughed for the first time in weeks.
That evening she brought Lucy to dinner at Vincent’s home.
A small dinner.
Six people.
No banquet.
Lucy looked at the chair beside Vincent.
“Mine?”
“If you want it.”
She climbed in.
Vincent did not say anything about blood.
May you like
Neither did anyone else.
That silence felt healthier than most family speeches he had heard in his life.
