Chapter 14

The criminal and civil matters resolved gradually.
Beatrice accepted responsibility for financial misconduct tied to several foundation transactions.
She agreed to restitution.
Permanent removal from foundation governance.
Restrictions on serving as a fiduciary for charitable organizations.
Additional penalties followed through the legal process.
She did not go from banquet tyrant to destitute prisoner overnight.
Real consequences were slower.
Public.
Documented.
Hard to reverse.
Her civil complaint against Vincent also ended without making him innocent.
Vincent accepted responsibility for using excessive force while removing her from Lucy.
The settlement did not require him to pretend Beatrice had done nothing wrong.
It simply recognized that protecting a child did not grant unlimited permission to retaliate physically.
Vincent disliked the distinction.
Then respected it.
The foundation recovered money.
More importantly, its governance changed.
Independent directors joined.
Related-party grants became transparent.
Family members could still participate.
They simply no longer controlled every answer.
At the first annual banquet under the new rules, Elena refused to use the old ballroom.
She chose a hotel instead.
Vincent complained.
“The ballroom is perfectly good.”
“The ballroom has history.”
“So does Italy.”
Elena stared at him.
Vincent surrendered.
The hotel it was.
Lucy attended.
She was five now.
She wore a blue dress and insisted on carrying her own tiny purse.
At the entrance, a staff member checked the seating chart.
Lucy’s name appeared beside Elena.
No special notation.
No asterisk.
No explanation that she was adopted.
Just:
Lucy Moretti.
Vincent noticed Elena staring at it.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
“You sure?”
Elena touched the printed name.
“This should have always been boring.”
Vincent understood exactly what she meant.
Belonging should not have needed a board vote.
Or an audit.
May you like
Or a scandal.
Sometimes justice was making something ordinary that another person had insisted on turning into a battlefield.
