Chapter 4

Lucy’s pediatrician confirmed she had no serious injury from the fall.
A bruised elbow.
A sore shoulder.
Nothing more.
Vincent should have felt relieved.
Instead, the doctor’s second observation bothered him.
“Lucy asked me if adopted children heal differently.”
Vincent stared at her.
“What?”
“She wanted to know if her arm hurt because she was adopted.”
Elena covered her mouth.
The doctor continued gently.
“Children this age build explanations from whatever adults repeatedly emphasize.”
Vincent understood.
Beatrice’s behavior had not started at the banquet.
The banquet had simply made it impossible to ignore.
That afternoon, Elena agreed to let Vincent visit Lucy at her apartment.
He arrived without bodyguards inside.
Lucy was building a castle from magnetic tiles.
“Grandpa.”
She did not run to him.
Another consequence.
Vincent sat on the floor.
“Can I help?”
Lucy handed him a blue square.
He attached it badly.
She corrected him.
For fifteen minutes, they did not discuss the banquet.
Then Lucy asked:
“Is Aunt Bea your aunt?”
“Yes.”
“So she’s family?”
“Yes.”
“She was mean.”
“Yes.”
Lucy frowned.
“Family can be mean?”
Vincent looked at Elena.
She did not rescue him.
“Yes.”
“Then family means nice sometimes?”
“No.”
He chose the answer carefully.
“Family is who you’re connected to. Being connected doesn’t give someone permission to hurt you.”
Lucy thought.
“Can I not sit with Aunt Bea?”
“Yes.”
That answer came easily.
Then:
“Can Mommy not sit with her?”
Vincent looked at Elena again.
“That’s Mommy’s decision.”
Elena’s expression softened slightly.
It was the first sign all day that Vincent had said something right.
Later, after Lucy went to bed, Elena showed him another document.
A seating chart from three previous foundation dinners.
Lucy’s name had been placed at the family table originally.
Each time it was later moved.
Once to a children’s side table.
Once beside staff.
Once removed entirely.
All three revisions came from Beatrice’s office.
Vincent looked at the timestamps.
Each change happened shortly after Elena submitted questions about foundation grants.
Clue number two.
The humiliations were not random.
They followed Elena’s scrutiny.
Vincent looked at his daughter.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“Why keep attending?”
“Because leaving would give her what she wanted.”
Vincent understood the strategy.
Beatrice used Lucy’s belonging as a pressure point.
Push Elena.
Humiliate the child.
Wait for the mother to withdraw.
Then call the withdrawal proof that Elena was too emotional for governance.
May you like
It was cruel.
But still not enough to explain what Beatrice was protecting.
