Chapter 1

Vanessa sat wrapped in the very silk robe I had lent her, looking entirely too comfortable amidst white linen curtains and the antique dresser we had lovingly hunted down together in Southampton. When Ethan coldly told me, “She’s staying. You can take the guest room,” and followed it by grabbing my wrist to stop me from “embarrassing him,” something inside me fundamentally shifted. It wasn't just the blatant disrespect of finding another woman in our bed; it was the chilling realization that my husband cared far more about keeping up appearances and avoiding a scandal than he did about the wreckage he had made of my heart.
I pulled my arm away, refusing to let him intimidate me with his sharp glares and defensive demands that I “stop acting crazy.” When he warned me not to make a scene, telling me that we could handle this quietly because I was always “reasonable,” I saw him clearly for the coward he truly was. I reached over to the ceramic jewelry dish on our nightstand, slipped my wedding ring off my finger, and dropped it right into the center with a tiny, definitive clatter. Ethan flinched at the sound, horrified by the symbolic gesture, while Vanessa arrogantly chimed in from the sheets, claiming that Ethan had stopped loving me long before he ever touched her.

Instead of screaming or throwing a tantrum—reactions they both seemed to brace for—I stayed ice-cold. I turned my back on them, ignoring Ethan’s furious demands that I close the bedroom door and stay put. As I walked down the long, sunlit hallway, passing framed photographs of our wedding day, my mind raced with thoughts of retaliation and survival. And then, my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a text message from my mother, cheerfully announcing that she, my father, and Ethan’s parents were just arriving downstairs, clutching flowers, champagne, and our old wedding album for a surprise tenth-anniversary celebration they had secretly organized.
Panic flashed across Ethan and Vanessa's faces as my mother’s voice rang out from the foyer below, followed closely by my father booming, “Where’s the anniversary couple?” Ethan rushed to the doorway, barefoot and desperate, whispering frantic pleas for me to close the door and keep quiet. But I stood my ground at the top of the stairs, looking down at the foyer as my mother's footsteps began climbing the steps. The trap had sprung, and there was nowhere left for my cheating husband and my ungrateful, treacherous best friend to hide.
