Chapter 2

Ethan stood frozen in the doorway of our bedroom, his face draining of all color. The man who had commanded boardrooms and treated my boundaries with casual dismissal was now paralyzed by the sheer terror of public exposure. Vanessa was cowering slightly behind him, clutching the edges of my silk robe tightly around her throat, her previous smugness completely replaced by raw panic. They had spent weeks, perhaps even months, sneaking around behind my back, believing they were untouchable in this secluded coastal haven, but they had completely failed to account for old-fashioned parental timing.

"Claire, sweetheart? Are you up there?" my mother called out again, her voice echoing warm and bright up the stairwell. She reached the landing just as I stood near the top step, watching her face light up with a smile that immediately faltered when she saw my expression. Behind her, my father and Ethan’s parents huffed up the last few steps, beaming with excitement and holding the anniversary album wrapped in silver paper.

For a brief, agonizing second, time seemed to stand still on that landing. My mother’s eyes darted from my composed, unsmiling face toward the open master bedroom door behind me, where Ethan and Vanessa stood trapped like deer in headlights. The silence that fell over the group was heavy, thick enough to cut with a knife. The joyful atmosphere evaporated instantly, replaced by a sudden, chilling confusion as my mother asked, "What is going on up here? Who is that in your room?"

Before Ethan could stammer out a pathetic lie or demand privacy, I stepped forward and took the silver-wrapped package from my mother’s hands. I looked straight into my parents' bewildered eyes, and then past them to Ethan’s mother, whose smile had completely vanished. I knew that whatever happened next would blow our families apart, but as I looked back at the man who had traded ten years of loyalty for a cheap betrayal, I knew I didn't have to protect his secrets anymore. The truth was about to come out, and there was no closed door in the world strong enough to keep it hidden.
