Chapter 4

I didn't hold back a single detail. I told them about the late nights at the office that weren't work-related, the subtle emotional shifts, the way Ethan had started gaslighting me whenever I questioned his behavior, and finally, finding Vanessa in our bed earlier that afternoon. When Ethan walked into the kitchen, looking as though he wanted to plead his case, my mother simply looked at him with icy disdain and told him not to speak another word.

"The divorce papers will be drawn up on Monday, Ethan," I said, my voice steady, clear, and completely devoid of the tears he probably expected me to shed. "You can keep the house, you can keep the Southampton memories, and you can keep Vanessa. I want nothing to do with either of you ever again." Ethan opened his mouth to protest, muttering something about how we could work things out, how we could go to counseling, how he had made a terrible mistake. But there was no remorse in his eyes—only the fear of losing his status, his comfortable routine, and the clean image he clung to so desperately.

My father stepped between us, putting a firm hand on Ethan’s chest to push him back. "You heard my daughter. Pack your things and get out of this house tonight. We are taking Claire home with us." Vanessa appeared timidly in the kitchen doorway, packed bag in hand, looking around as if she expected someone to comfort her. No one did. My mother walked past her as if she were a ghost, refusing to even acknowledge her existence.

As I packed a single suitcase with my clothes, my laptop, and a few personal items, I looked around the master bedroom one last time. The Atlantic waves were still crashing against the shore outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, indifferent to the human drama unfolding inside. I picked up my abandoned wedding ring from the ceramic dish, not to put it back on, but to drop it into the trash can by the vanity. I walked out of that house without looking back, stepping into the cool evening air with my head held high, knowing that the worst chapter of my life was finally closed forever.
