Chapter 1 - The Silver Pocket Watch

The most feared Mafia boss in New York watched his fiancée humiliate me in front of two hundred wealthy guests, never realizing his own second-in-command was secretly torturing him through the ballroom speakers. I was only his maid, but when I risked everything to save him, he grabbed my wrist in a dark electrical room and asked the one question that could expose the identity I'd spent two years hiding.
My name is Clara Bennett.
I'm twenty-five, and for two years, I've worked as a house maid inside the grand Rossi mansion.
My employer is Dante Rossi.
Thirty-six years old. Six-foot-four, with broad muscular shoulders, powerful tattooed arms, and cold silver-gray eyes that could freeze a man's blood with a single glance. A black dragon stretches across his broad chest, its scales winding up his thick neck. His dangerously handsome face has terrified Mafia families across America for over a decade.
Tonight, he was celebrating his engagement to Isabella Bellini.
And I was serving champagne.
“Watch where you're going, maid!”
A wealthy guest shoved his heavy mahogany chair back into my path. Six crystal glasses rattled violently on my silver tray, hot vintage champagne sloshing over the delicate glass rims.
Isabella Bellini, seated beside Dante at the head table, let out a sharp, tinkling laugh. “Honestly, Dante should hire prettier, far more competent servants. She moves around like a frightened mouse.”
My cheeks burned hot. I lowered my eyes instantly, staring down at my crisp white apron.
For two years, I'd swallowed insults just like that because I desperately needed this job. And because nobody in this house, in this city, or in this entire criminal empire could ever discover who I really was.
Then the ballroom floor trembled.
Once.
Twice.
The heavy orchestral music pumping through the high-end ceiling speakers suddenly shifted, the sub-bass frequencies dropping into a terrifying, subsonic rumble that rattled the crystal chandeliers overhead.
I looked toward Dante.
He sat beneath an enormous centerpiece chandelier, his long, tattooed fingers gripping a heavy silver pocket watch so hard his knuckles were ghostly white. His jaw was clenched tight enough to crack stone. Sweat glistened at his temple despite the cool air conditioning.
Every heavy, unnatural beat of the music made his broad shoulders jerk almost imperceptibly.
Something was terribly wrong.
Then I noticed Matteo Bellini—Dante's most trusted Mafia captain and Isabella's older brother.
Matteo stood beside the DJ sound system in the far corner of the ballroom, a cruel, satisfied smile touching his lips as he signaled subtly to the sound engineer to increase the low-frequency output.
My blood turned completely cold.
I had seen this exact weapon used before. Years ago, in a concrete basement in Mexico, cartel operatives had used violent, subterranean sound vibrations to break high-value prisoners, causing silent cerebral hemorrhages and internal panic without leaving a single visible mark on the skin.
Dante was showing the exact same terrifying, neurological symptoms. He was being tortured in plain sight while two hundred people cheered and drank champagne.
I searched the crowded ballroom frantically for his chief bodyguard, Marcus.
Gone. The corridors were completely clear of loyal Rossi enforcers.
The speakers thundered again, an unnatural 18-Hz frequency pulsing through the marble floorboards. Dante's hand began trembling violently. His breathing grew shallow, his silver eyes wide with suffocating pain.
I made my decision. I abandoned my champagne tray on a side table and slipped through the hidden servants' corridor behind the velvet drapes.
I sprinted down the narrow concrete stairwell to the basement electrical room, finding the emergency master key hanging beside the door. My fingers shook so badly I dropped the key once before jamming it into the lock.
If anyone discovered what I knew—if Matteo caught me interfering—my carefully constructed ghost life would shatter. My past would catch up to me, and I would be executed before sunrise.
But I couldn't stand by and let him suffer.
I shoved the heavy steel door open, found the main ballroom circuit breaker panel, grabbed the thick rubber-handled disconnect lever, and pulled it down with all my weight.
CLACK.
The music died instantly. The ballroom plunged into silent darkness.
Suddenly, a massive hand reached out from the shadow of the corridor and seized my wrist.
I gasped, my heart leaping into my throat.
Dante stood towering over me in the dim emergency lighting. His enormous tattooed frame filled the entire doorway. His face was pale, his silver eyes wild, his breathing heavy and uneven.
“Who sent you?” he demanded, his deep voice a ragged whisper.
“Nobody, sir,” I stammered, trying not to show the sheer terror tearing through me.
His gray eyes narrowed into dangerous, piercing slits as he tightened his grip.
“Then how did you know what they were doing to me?”
I couldn't answer. Because the truth behind my knowledge would get us both killed before the night was over.
Instead, I gently, deliberately freed my wrist from his grasp, stepping backward into the cool shadows of the electrical room.
“Congratulations on your engagement, Mr. Rossi.”
He stared down at me, his brow furrowing in deep confusion. “Clara...?”
“I'm resigning.”
His cold expression changed instantly, a flicker of genuine shock crossing his handsome features. “Why?”
Before I could speak, heavy footsteps echoed down the concrete corridor outside. Matteo’s harsh voice rang out through the dark hall.
“Dante! Where are you? The power cut out!”
My blood went cold as ice.
Dante stepped closer without hesitation, his massive body completely shielding me from the doorway. His voice dropped to an intense, dangerous whisper that made my soul tremble.
“Clara... why does my late father's classified Mafia file contain your photograph?”
I stopped breathing entirely.
Because the photograph he had found inside his father's secret vault didn't belong to a simple house maid named Clara Bennett.

It belonged to Elena Vance—a girl everyone in the underworld believed had died in a fiery explosion six years ago.
Me.
