Chapter 4 - The Serpent's Gala

By 11:00 PM, the grand ballroom of the Rossi mansion had been restored to pristine perfection.
The crystal chandeliers burned brightly once again, casting a golden light across the high-society guests who had gathered back near the champagne towers. The string quartet had replaced the electronic DJ, filling the air with smooth, elegant classical music.
Standing near the head table, wearing a dazzling crimson silk dress that clung to her curves, was Isabella Bellini. She was sipping a glass of rosé, laughing loudly with her brother Matteo, though both of them looked visibly tense, their eyes constantly darting toward the grand double doors of the ballroom.
“Where is he, Matteo?” Isabella hissed under her breath, her sweet smile masking her panic. “It’s been forty minutes! The acoustic frequency should have triggered a fatal aneurysm within ten minutes!”
“Keep your voice down, Isabella!” Matteo snapped quietly, scanning the crowd. “Something went wrong with the wiring. The main fuse blew before the frequency reached peak output. But Dante was already disoriented when he left the room. He’s probably collapsed in his private office right now.”
“Then go check on him!” Isabella demanded. “If he’s dead, we need to announce it before his regional captains realize what happened!”
Before Matteo could answer, the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom were thrown wide open.
A sudden, breathless hush swept across the entire room. Two hundred wealthy guests, Mafia bosses, and political figures turned their heads in unison.
Stepping into the ballroom was Dante Rossi.
He looked towering, powerful, and utterly lethal. He wore a fresh, perfectly tailored charcoal three-piece suit, his dark hair combed back, his silver-gray eyes scanning the room like a predator inspecting his territory. There was zero trace of weakness, zero sign of pain in his posture.
Beside him, resting her small hand comfortably on his broad arm, was me.
I was no longer wearing the white apron and plain navy dress of a house maid.
Dante had placed me in a breathtaking, custom-made floor-length gown of liquid dark emerald silk that accentuated every line of my body. My dark hair was styled in soft, elegant waves cascading over my shoulders, and around my neck rested a breathtaking, hundred-carat diamond necklace from the private Rossi vault.
Gasps echoed through the crowd.
Isabella’s crystal champagne glass slipped from her fingers, crashing onto the marble floor and shattering into a hundred pieces. Her face drained of every single drop of color, turning a sickly, ghostly white.
“W-what... what is this?!” Isabella choked out, her voice trembling in horror as she stared at me. “That... that’s the maid! Why is she wearing the Rossi family crest necklace?!”
Matteo took a frantic step backward, his jaw dropping open as his eyes locked onto my face. For the first time in six years, recognition flashed behind his eyes—the sudden, horrifying realization of who was standing before him.
“Elena...” Matteo whispered, his voice laced with pure, unadulterated terror. “It’s impossible... you died in Chicago...”
Dante guided me smoothly through the parting crowd, the sea of guests stepping back respectfully as we walked toward the head table. The authority radiating from Dante was absolute, suffocating every voice in the room.
We stopped directly in front of Isabella and Matteo.
Dante reached into his inner jacket pocket, pulled out a velvet-lined jewelry box, and tossed it carelessly onto the table in front of Isabella.
Inside the box lay her engagement ring—a massive ten-carat solitaire diamond.
“What... what is the meaning of this, Dante?” Isabella stammered, tears of panic brimming in her eyes. “Is this a joke? Who is this woman?!”
Dante rested his broad hand gently over mine on his arm, looking down at Isabella with an icy, merciless calm that chilled the entire room to its core.
“The engagement is canceled, Isabella,” Dante announced, his deep baritone carrying clearly across the silent ballroom for every Mafia family to hear.
“Canceled?!” Matteo shouted, trying to maintain his composure as his hand reached subtly toward the suit jacket where his sidearm rested. “Don Rossi, you cannot disrespect the Bellini family like this! We had a legal contract! An alliance!”
“An alliance built on murder and cowardice,” Dante corrected smoothly.
With a single flick of Dante’s fingers, thirty heavily armed Rossi enforcers stepped out from the side corridors, their weapons raised, surrounding Matteo, Isabella, and their private security detail within seconds.
The crowd gasped, stumbling backward in terror.
Matteo froze, his hand sticking to his jacket as he realized he was completely surrounded.
“Six years ago,” Dante declared, his voice echoing like thunder off the vaulted ceilings, “the Bellini family ordered a illegal hit on the Vance empire in Chicago, burning their estate to steal their shipping charters. And tonight, Matteo brought a military acoustic weapon into my house, attempting to assassinate me in front of my guests.”

Dante turned his cold, silver eyes toward Matteo, stepping directly into his personal space.
“You failed six years ago, Matteo,” Dante whispered, his voice thick with lethal authority. “Because Elena Vance survived. And tonight... she came back to collect her debt.”
