Chapter 2 - The Fortress in the SkyThe penthouse suite occupied the top three floors of the prestigious Rossy Tower in downtown Greybridge. It was a soaring expanse of dark hardwood, floor-to-ceiling glass walls, and state-of-the-art biometric security systems. To the rest of the world, it was the pinnacle of modern luxury. To Clara, as the heavy elevator doors slid shut behind them with a soft chime, it felt like entering a gold-plated cage built thirty stories above the ground.

"Take her to the master suite," Vincent ordered Dino as he peeled off his rain-drenched jacket. "I want two security guards stationed at the private elevator bank and three more monitoring the perimeter cameras. Nobody enters this floor without my direct clearance."
"Vincent, stop!" Clara turned around, wrapping his massive coat tighter around her body to hide her trembling frame. "You can't treat me like a prisoner! I am an adult, not one of your syndicate soldiers!"
Vincent stepped into her personal space, his imposing height looming over her. "You stopped being treated like a civilian the moment you decided to carry the heir of the Rossy family into a highway grease trap, Clara. You will stay in this penthouse where there are bulletproof windows and a top-tier medical team on twenty-four-hour call."
"And what about my life?" she challenged, her eyes flashing with defiance despite her overwhelming exhaustion. "My job at the diner? My apartment?"
"Your job was a health hazard, and your apartment was a structural embarrassment," Vincent replied coldly, pulling a sleek black smartphone from his pocket. "Frankie is already clearing out your belongings from that basement hole. Anything worth keeping will be brought here. The rest will be incinerated."
"You have no right!" Clara cried out, her voice echoing off the high ceilings.
"I have every right to protect my legacy!" Vincent roared back, his calm facade finally breaking. The sheer power of his voice made the surrounding guards stiffen. "Do you have any idea what is happening out on these streets right now, Clara? The Moretti family has brought in mercenaries from abroad. We are on the brink of an all-out territorial war! If my enemies had found out that my pregnant ex-wife was living alone in a basement with a flimsy lock on the door, they would have used you to force me onto my knees!"
Clara took a step back, the harsh reality of his words hitting her like cold water. She had spent eight months convincing herself that she was invisible, that her quiet obscurity was a shield. She had completely forgotten that in Vincent’s violent world, obscurity was merely vulnerability.
"I didn't ask for your war, Vincent," she said softly, her anger deflating into deep sadness. "I left because I didn't want our child to breathe the air of this violence."
Vincent stared at her, his jaw clenching tightly. For a moment, a flash of genuine pain crossed his dark eyes, but he quickly masked it behind his cold armor.
"The violence exists whether you choose to acknowledge it or not, Clara," he said, his voice dropping into a quiet, firm register. "The only difference now is that inside these walls, you and our son are completely untouchable."
He signaled to a middle-aged woman wearing crisp medical scrubs who had just stepped out of a side hallway.
"This is Dr. Elena Vance," Vincent introduced. "She is the chief of maternal medicine at St. Jude's. She will be residing in the guest suite until the baby is born. You will undergo a complete medical examination right now."
"Right now? It's three in the morning!" Clara protested.
"You haven't seen a high-risk specialist in eight months," Vincent stated flatly, leaving no room for negotiation. "Dr. Vance, ensure she and the baby are completely stable. Call me the moment the preliminary ultrasound is complete."
Without waiting for Clara's reply, Vincent turned on his heel and walked into his private home office, slamming the heavy double doors shut behind him.
An hour later, Clara was lying on a plush, heated examination bed inside the penthouse’s customized medical room. Dr. Vance was moving a warm ultrasound transducer over Clara’s bare stomach, watching a high-definition monitor mounted on the wall.
The door to the medical room opened quietly. Vincent stepped inside, his jacket off, his dark sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He didn't say a word; he simply walked over to the side of the bed and fixed his intense gaze on the glowing screen.
Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.
The loud, rhythmic sound of a strong, healthy heart filled the room.
Vincent’s breath hitched in his chest. His eyes widened as the ultrasound image resolved into the clear, distinct outline of a fully formed baby—a tiny hand tucked near its face, a strong spine, and a small, delicate leg kicking lightly.
"The fetus is remarkably healthy," Dr. Vance explained with a professional smile, pointing at the screen. "Heart rate is optimal at 145 beats per minute. Weight is estimated at five pounds, four ounces. However, Mrs. Rossy is suffering from severe physical exhaustion, mild dehydration, and elevated stress levels. She needs absolute bed rest immediately."
Vincent didn't hear a word about the exhaustion. He was completely mesmerized by the glowing image of his son. Slowly, as if moving in a dream, he reached out his hand and touched the glass of the monitor screen, tracing the tiny outline of the baby's head.
Clara watched him from the bed. She saw the terrifying mob boss melt away completely, replaced by a man filled with profound, overwhelming awe. It was a sight she had never witnessed during their two years of marriage.
"He's perfect," Vincent whispered softly, his voice thick with emotion.
He looked down at Clara, his dark eyes shining with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat.
"You did this," he said quietly, stepping closer to her bed. "You carried him through the cold, through the dirt, through the exhaustion... you kept him safe."
"I did it for him," Clara whispered, pulling the sheet up to her chest. "Not for you."
May you like
Vincent leaned down, resting his broad hands on either side of her pillow, bringing his face inches from hers.
"It doesn't matter who you did it for, Clara," he murmured, his breath warm against her cheek. "He is here. You are here. And as long as I have blood pumping through my veins, neither of you will ever leave my side again."
