Chapter 4 - The Betrayal WithinThe storm outside raged violently, rain hammering against the penthouse glass like sharp needles. It was 3:00 AM.

Clara lay awake in the massive master bed, unable to sleep. The uncomfortable weight of the baby, combined with the sickening anxiety over Vincent’s safety out in the streets, kept her mind racing in circles. She hated his violence, hated his criminal world, but the thought of him dying in a dark alley left a cold, terrifying hole in her heart. She realized, with a heavy sense of guilt, that despite everything he had done, she still loved him.

Suddenly, the lights inside the penthouse flickered violently and went completely dark.

The soft hum of the air conditioning ceased instantly. The red emergency lights along the baseboards did not kick on.

Clara sat up rapidly in bed, her instinctual alarm bells ringing loudly. "Dr. Vance?" she called out into the dark hallway.

There was no answer. Only dead silence.

Clara slowly swung her swollen legs over the side of the bed. She grabbed a thick silk robe, wrapped it around her heavy frame, and stepped out into the dark corridor.

She walked toward the main living room, her heart pounding frantically against her ribs. As she rounded the corner, she saw a terrible sight framed by the distant flash of lightning outside the window.

Dr. Vance and two security guards were lying unconscious on the floor near the private elevator bank. Standing over them were four men dressed in tactical black gear, holding silenced automatic weapons.

And standing right in the center of them, holding a master security override keycard, was Julian Rossy.

Clara gasped softly, backing away, but her foot bumped against an decorative vase on a side table.

Clink!

"Over there!" one of the mercenaries barked.

Before Clara could turn and run back to the bedroom, two heavy tactical boots rushed down the hallway. Strong, gloved hands grabbed her roughly by her arms, dragging her into the center of the dark living room.

"Careful with her," Julian instructed with a sinister chuckle, stepping into the dim light. "We don't want the precious cargo damaged before we deliver it."

"Julian..." Clara breathed, her stomach twisting in horror. "You... you betrayed your own brother?"

"Brother?" Julian spat bitterly, stepping closer to her. "Vincent treated me like a dog my entire life! He kept all the power, all the territory, all the respect for himself! And now he wanted to pass it all down to a bastard child born in a highway diner!"

"He is your nephew!" Clara yelled, trying to pull her arm free from the mercenary's tight grip.

"He is a bargaining chip," Julian corrected coldly. "I struck a deal with Don Moretti three days ago. I disabled the penthouse’s primary power grid and security override from the main server room downstairs. Right now, Vincent is walking straight into an ambush in Newark. And while he’s dying in a warehouse, I am handing you and his unborn child over to Moretti in exchange for total control of the Rossy syndicate."

"Vincent will tear you apart!" Clara defied, tears of terror burning her eyes as a sudden, sharp pain flared deep in her lower abdomen.

"Vincent will be a corpse in an hour," Julian laughed darkly. He gestured to his men. "Drag her down to the service elevator. We have a van waiting in the basement."

As the mercenary yanked Clara forward, a fierce, blinding contraction seized her body. She gasped in agony, her knees buckling beneath her heavy weight.

SPLASH!

A clear pool of fluid suddenly broke across the hardwood floor, soaking her slippers.

The mercenary paused in complete shock. "Hey... her water just broke!"

Julian frowned in disgust. "Now? You've got to be kidding me!"

Clara clutched her stomach, crying out in sheer pain as another intense contraction slammed through her frame. The baby was coming. Five weeks early, amidst a deadly betrayal inside a darkened fortress.

"It doesn't matter!" Julian snapped impatiently. "Throw her in the back of the van! Moretti's private doctor can deliver the kid at their compound!"

The mercenary grabbed Clara by her silk collar, lifting her off her feet.

BOOM!

The heavy reinforced double doors of the private elevator were suddenly blown completely off their tracks with a deafening, explosive roar.

Smoke, flying debris, and shattered glass filled the air. Before the smoke could even clear, a towering figure charged through the destruction like an unstoppable force of nature.

It was Vincent.

His face was covered in soot and blood, his dark eyes glowing with a terrifying, primal fury that transcended human limits. He had bypassed the dead elevator, scaling thirty flights of emergency stairs in full tactical gear the moment his private phone alerted him that the penthouse security grid had been breached.

"TOUCH HER AND YOU DIE!" Vincent roared.

Before Julian’s mercenaries could even raise their silenced weapons, Vincent unleashed pure, unadulterated hell.

RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

Muzzle flashes illuminated the dark living room in strobe-like bursts. Vincent moved with lethal, horrifying speed, dropping the first two mercenaries with precise headshots before they could squeeze their triggers. He tackled the third mercenary over the balcony sofa, snapping the man's neck with a sickening crack.

Julian shrieked in absolute terror, dropping his weapon and scrambling backward toward the broken elevator shaft.

"Vincent!" Clara screamed through her agonizing contractions, collapsing onto her side on the floor.

Hearing her pain, Vincent turned his head. His eyes locked onto Clara writhing on the floor, surrounded by the pool of water.

In that fraction of a second of distraction, Julian pulled a hidden small-caliber pistol from his ankle holster, aiming it directly at Vincent’s chest.

"Die, brother!" Julian screamed, pulling the trigger.

BANG!

The bullet struck Vincent squarely in the side of his chest, forcing him back a step. Blood instantly blossomed across his white shirt.

Clara shrieked in horror. "VINCENT!"

Julian smiled maniacally, preparing to fire a second shot directly into Vincent’s head.

But Vincent didn't fall. He didn't even flinch. Driven by pure, superhuman instinct to protect his wife and child, Vincent ignored the lethal bullet lodged in his ribs. He lunged forward like an enraged lion, grabbing Julian’s wrist, twisting it until the bones shattered loudly, and forcing Julian down onto his knees.

"You broke my house," Vincent growled into Julian’s ear, his voice sounding like grinding stone. "You threatened my wife. You endangered my son."

"Vincent... please! We're blood!" Julian begged desperately, tears and saliva leaking from his face. "Brother, please!"

"I have no brother," Vincent stated coldly.

With a final, devastating effort, Vincent hurled Julian through the shattered floor-to-ceiling glass window. Julian’s terrified scream echoed into the stormy night, fading rapidly as he fell thirty stories down into the dark abyss of the city.

Vincent turned around slowly, clutching his bleeding side, his breathing heavy and ragged. He stumbled over to Clara, collapsing onto his knees right beside her on the soaked floor.

"Clara..." he gasped out, his blood staining her silk robe as he pulled her trembling body into his broad arms. "Are you... are you hurt?"

"Vincent! You're shot!" she wept frantically, pressing her hands against the gaping wound on his chest. "Oh God, you're bleeding so much!"

May you like

"It's nothing... just a scratch," he lied weakly, coughing up a drop of blood, his face turning ghostly pale. He looked down at her swollen stomach and the pool of water around them. "The baby..."

"The baby is coming right now!" Clara cried out as another massive contraction ripped through her body. "Vincent, I can't hold him back! He's coming!"
