Chapter 3 - The Gathering StormFour days passed inside the penthouse fortress.

Clara was treated like royalty, though it felt more like house arrest under golden lights. Every morning, private chefs prepared nutritious meals tailored specifically to Dr. Vance's strict dietary guidelines. Expensive maternity clothes made from the softest silk and cashmere were delivered in endless racks. A team of private physical therapists helped relieve the swelling in her ankles.

Yet, despite the luxurious comfort, the air inside the penthouse was thick with escalating tension.

From her balcony window, Clara could see dark armored vehicles coming and going from the building's underground garage at all hours of the night. Vincent was rarely sleeping; he spent eighteen hours a day locked inside his office with his top syndicate lieutenants, his voice occasionally booming through the heavy oak doors during heated arguments.

On Friday evening, while Clara was sitting in the main living room sipping warm chamomile tea, the heavy elevator doors chimed open. Frankie stepped out, looking battered and bruised, his tailored suit torn at the shoulder. Behind him walked a tall, elegant man wearing a sharp gray suit—Julian Rossy, Vincent’s younger half-brother and the head of the syndicate's financial operations.

"Where is he?" Julian demanded, wiping a smudge of blood from his cheekbone.

"In the office," Frankie replied grimly. "The Moretti family struck our distribution warehouse in Newark two hours ago. We lost three men."

Clara stood up from the sofa, holding her stomach. "What happened? Is someone hurt?"

Julian turned to look at her, a cold, disdainful smile playing on his lips. "Ah, the runaway bride returns. Living the high life again while our soldiers bleed in the streets."

"Julian, watch your tongue," Frankie warned sharply.

"Why should I?" Julian sneered, stepping toward Clara. "Vincent has lost his mind over her! He pulled fifty of our best security operatives off the front lines just to guard this penthouse because she showed up with a belly full of his heir! The Moretti family knows we are stretched thin. Her sudden reappearance is destroying this family!"

Before Julian could take another step toward Clara, the double doors of Vincent’s office flew open with violent force.

Vincent emerged like a roaring demon. In a split second, he crossed the marble living room, grabbed Julian by the throat, and slammed his half-brother violently against the reinforced glass wall overlooking the city skyline.

"Say one more word to her," Vincent growled, his voice a lethal rasp, his fingers tightening around Julian’s throat until the younger man choked for air. "Say one more word about my wife or my child, and I will personally throw you off this balcony."

"Vincent... stop!" Clara screamed, rushing forward as fast as her pregnancy allowed. "Don't do this!"

Frankie stepped in cautiously. "Boss, please. We need Julian alive. He holds the key codes to the offshore war chest."

Vincent glared at his half-brother for five agonizing seconds before shoving him roughly to the floor. Julian collapsed onto the hardwood, gasping wildly for air and rubbing his bruised neck.

"Get out of my sight," Vincent ordered Julian coldly. "Frankie, double the perimeter security. The Moretti family is making a desperate move because they know their supply lines are collapsing. We finish this war tonight."

Julian slowly rose to his feet, casting a dark, venomous look at Clara before turning and stepping into the private elevator.

Clara stood frozen in the middle of the room, her chest heaving with terror. She looked at Vincent, whose hands were still shaking with residual rage.

"Is this what our son's life is going to be?" Clara asked, her voice cracking with deep emotional pain. "Constant death? Men getting slammed against walls? Assassins at the gates?"

Vincent walked over to her, his expression softening as he looked at her frightened face. He reached out to touch her cheek, but she pulled away instinctively.

"I am ending this tonight, Clara," Vincent promised softly. "The Moretti family will be completely wiped out by dawn. Once they are gone, there will be no more threats. No more wars. Just peace."

"You can't buy peace with blood, Vincent!" she cried out. "Violence only breeds more violence! When does it end?"

"It ends when I say it ends," Vincent replied with absolute authority. He looked down at her heavy stomach, his eyes softening again. "Rest tonight, Clara. Tomorrow, this city will belong to us, and our son will be born into a world where no one can ever challenge his name."

He kissed her forehead gently—a lingering, warm gesture that sent a confusing shiver down her spine—before turning to lead his men into the dark night.
