Chapter 1 - The Ten-Thousand-Dollar Shift and the Midnight Secret That Froze My Blood

“Dance with me.” Those three words from New York’s most feared Mafia boss made an entire nightclub fall silent, but when I refused, my manager grabbed my arm and threatened to fire me. Seconds later, the dangerous stranger placed $10,000 on the table, looked me straight in the eyes, and made an offer that could change my little brother’s life forever.

My name is Elena Vance, and at twenty-three, I worked as a waitress at the Velvet Lounge, an exclusive Manhattan nightclub where wealthy men spent more on champagne than I paid in three months of rent. Every night, I endured drunken customers, wandering hands, and a manager who treated me like I was disposable.

But quitting wasn't an option. My ten-year-old brother, Toby, had a congenital heart defect, and his surgery at NYU Langone Hospital was scheduled for the following week. Our insurance wouldn't cover everything, and I was desperately trying to collect enough money to save him. Every dollar I earned meant another chance for my little brother to survive.

That Friday night, my manager, Greg, grabbed my arm while I was cleaning a VIP booth. “You missed a spot, you useless girl,” he hissed, digging his fingers into my skin.

“Please let go,” I whispered, fighting back tears. He shoved me against the booth and threatened to fire me if I didn't start smiling for the wealthy customers.

At 11:45 p.m., the nightclub suddenly grew quiet. Four armed-looking security men entered through the VIP doors, followed by a tall stranger in an expensive charcoal suit. I recognized him immediately from the stories whispered throughout New York. Dante Vancel, the ruthless Mafia boss whose empire stretched across construction, shipping, and businesses nobody dared investigate. Even the richest customers stepped aside as he walked toward the central booth. Greg practically trembled while offering him the finest champagne, but Dante simply ordered a bottle of Macallan 52 whiskey.

I stayed near the service station, clutching my empty tray and praying he wouldn't notice me. Then his gray eyes found mine across the crowded room. He stared for several seconds before suddenly standing. My heart pounded as he crossed the nightclub, ignoring everyone who tried to approach him.

“What’s your name?” he asked.

“Elena Vance, sir.”

He repeated my name slowly, almost as though he recognized it. Then he extended his hand and said, “Dance with me.”

I froze as nearby conversations stopped. “I'm sorry, sir, but I can't. I'm working, and my manager will fire me.”

Before Dante could respond, Greg rushed over and seized my arm. “This stupid girl doesn't know who you are, Mr. Vancel. She's fired!”

“Let go of her.” Dante's voice was barely above a whisper, but the entire room seemed to freeze. When Greg hesitated, Dante added, “Remove your hand before I remove it from your body.”

Greg released me immediately. “She was doing her job,” Dante said coldly. “That's loyalty, not disrespect.”

Then he pulled a thick white envelope from his jacket and placed it on the table. “Ten thousand dollars. I'm buying her shift.”

My breath caught as I stared at the envelope. That money could cover months of Toby's medication and help keep us from losing our apartment. Dante turned toward Greg. “Is she off the clock?”

“Yes, sir! Take her!”

“She isn't cattle,” Dante snapped. “I'm paying for her time because she refused to give it away.”

Then he looked at me again. “Now, Elena, will you dance with me?”

I thought about Toby lying in his hospital bed, waiting for a surgery we could barely afford. Finally, I whispered, “Okay.” Dante took my hand and led me toward the exit instead of the dance floor.

“Wait,” I said nervously. “I thought we were dancing.”

“I don't dance in places like this,” he replied.

“Then where are you taking me?” He stopped beside a waiting black limousine and turned toward me. “Somewhere better.”

But when his driver opened the door, Dante leaned closer and whispered something that made my blood run cold: “I know about Toby, Elena.”
