Chapter 4 - Bullets, Bloodshed, and the Brutal Awakening of the Syndicate

The boardroom of Meridian Logistics erupted into absolute chaos in less than a second.

Old man Petrovich cursed in Russian, diving behind a massive mahogany conference table while his remaining bodyguards scrambled to draw their weapons. But Dante’s enforcers were already positioned with terrifying tactical supremacy. Suppressed gunfire spat through the air with rhythmic, muffled cracks, shattering computer monitors, glass partitions, and executive chairs in a storm of synthetic dust and flying debris.

Viktor Petrovich let out a sharp cry of shock, releasing my wrist as a round grazed his shoulder, spinning him backward into a display case of imported crystal.

“Get down, Elena!” Dante roared, his eyes locked onto Viktor while firing two precise suppression shots that kept the Russian boss pinned behind the shattered cabinet.

I didn't hesitate. I dropped flat onto the carpeted floor, curling my arms over my head as glass rained down around me like glittering hail. The deafening roar of gunfire filled the enclosed space, smelling sharply of cordite and burnt gunpowder. For a moment, the corporate executive suite felt no different from the blood-soaked alleyways of the underworld. This was Dante Vancel’s world—a realm of absolute violence where power was measured in bullet calibers and territorial dominance.

Within forty-five seconds, the firefight was over.

Three of Petrovich’s guards lay unconscious on the floor, their weapons kicked away by Dante's enforcers. Viktor clutched his bleeding shoulder, his face pale with terror as Dante walked slowly across the ruined boardroom, his boots crunching on broken glass.

Dante towered over Viktor, pressing the cold steel barrel of his pistol directly beneath the Russian’s jawline.

“You thought you could operate in my city, smuggle contraband through my shipping lanes, and threaten people under my protection?” Dante asked, his voice deathly quiet, carrying the weight of an executioner. “You’re children playing with matches in a powder keg.”

“Vancel... wait!” Viktor choked out, coughing up a small trace of blood. “The girl... she’s a spy! She leaked your manifests!”

“She works for me, you idiot,” Dante replied coldly. “And everything in this building legally belongs to the Vancel syndicate as of twenty minutes ago, thanks to the financial leverage my legal team acquired this morning.”

Old man Petrovich crawled out from behind the conference table, his hands raised in surrender, his face gray with defeat. “Take the building, Dante. Take the docks. Just... spare our lives.”

Dante didn't lower his weapon immediately. He looked back across the ruined room, his piercing gray eyes scanning the floor until they found me kneeling near the coffee bar. His expression shifted instantly from the ruthless syndicate warlord to something raw, protective, and deeply intense.

He holstered his pistol, stepped over a tangle of communication cables, and walked quickly toward me. Extending a large, strong hand down to my level, he pulled me effortlessly to my feet.

“Are you hurt?” Dante demanded, his hands gripping my shoulders as he inspected me for injuries, his voice uncharacteristically urgent.

“I’m... I’m okay,” I breathed, trembling as I brushed a stray lock of hair from my forehead. “Just shaken up.”

“This is why I told you staying here was dangerous,” he murmured, pulling me slightly closer behind his broad frame as Dante’s enforcers began rounding up the surviving Russian operatives.

“You knew they would figure it out eventually,” I whispered, looking up into his scarred, handsome face. “You used me as bait.”

“I used you because you are the smartest, bravest operative I’ve ever deployed,” Dante corrected firmly, his gray eyes softening. “And because I made sure three tactical teams were stationed in the service alley the moment you entered this building. I never put you where I couldn't protect you, Elena.”
