Chapter 3 - The Wolf in the Boardroom and the Dangerous Game of Deception

Three weeks later, the transformation was complete. The worn-out black skirt and stained white blouse of the Velvet Lounge were gone, replaced by a razor-sharp charcoal pantsuit, custom Prada heels, and hair styled into a sleek, professional chignon. Standing in the thirty-second-floor glass-walled lobby of Meridian Logistics on Wall Street, I looked every bit the elite corporate executive.
In reality, I was a terrified waitress walking straight into the lion's den.
Meridian Logistics was the primary front for the Petrovich family—Russian mobsters who controlled the shipping lanes and weapon smuggling routes across the North Atlantic. My direct boss was Viktor Petrovich Jr., a volatile, paranoid man with cold blue eyes and a permanent sneer who treated his administrative staff like disposable pawns.
My first week was a relentless trial by fire. Viktor tested my limits constantly, dumping massive financial spreadsheets on my desk at 5:00 PM and demanding complete statistical breakdowns by morning. But I survived by channeling the same cold, stubborn endurance that had kept me alive working double shifts in Manhattan nightclubs. Whenever the pressure became unbearable, I thought of Toby running through the sunny yard of our new Queens brownstone, his heart beating strong and steady in his chest, and I pushed forward.
Dante’s tech specialists had implanted a secure, encrypted micro-transmitter inside the heel of my right designer pump. Every evening when I downloaded corporate shipping manifests from the secure mainframe onto a flash drive hidden in my compact mirror, I walked past the lobby sensors, transmitting encrypted logistics routes directly to Dante's private servers.
The danger escalated on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.
I was standing by the private coffee bar in the executive suite when Viktor Petrovich walked up behind me, his heavy hand resting uncomfortably low on the small of my back.
“Working late again, Miss Vance,” Viktor purred, his breath smelling of expensive scotch and peppermint. “Your efficiency is impressive. Almost... suspiciously impressive. People who rise through our ranks this quickly usually have powerful friends. Or secret handlers.”
My heart hammered frantically against my ribs, but my face remained an impassive mask of corporate calm. I turned slightly, slipping away from his touch with practiced grace. “I simply value my position, Mr. Petrovich. When you grow up supporting a sick sibling, you learn not to waste opportunities.”
Viktor narrowed his eyes, studying my expression like a predator evaluating wounded prey. Before he could press further, the heavy double doors of the executive elevator chimed, and his father, old man Petrovich, stepped out surrounded by armed bodyguards.
“Viktor,” the old boss barked in his thick Russian accent. “We have an emergency. The North Pier shipment has been flagged by federal customs. Someone inside this building leaked the manifest codes.”
My stomach dropped into my shoes. The North Pier shipment was the exact file I had downloaded and transmitted to Dante forty-eight hours ago.
Viktor’s head snapped back toward me, his eyes flaring with sudden, murderous suspicion. He reached across the counter, his fingers clamping violently around my wrist. “You,” Viktor hissed. “You were the only administrative assistant with access to the secure logistics server yesterday evening.”
Before Viktor could draw his concealed pistol, the glass security doors of the office splintered inward with an explosive crash.

Heavy boots thundered across the imported marble floor. Before the Russian bodyguards could even clear their holsters, Dante Vancel stepped through the smoke and shattered glass, flanked by his elite tactical enforcers. He wore a dark wool overcoat, his silver-threaded hair slightly ruffled by the wind, and in his right hand, he held a suppressed automatic pistol pointed squarely at Viktor’s chest.
“Let go of her wrist, Viktor,” Dante said, his voice echoing through the terrified boardroom with lethal, arctic fury. “Or I'll save federal customs the trouble and bury you right here.”
