Chapter 2

Th

e boardroom was completely silent,

as Claire walked through the heavy doors,

wearing a sharp navy suit,

and an expression of absolute resolve.

Grant sat at the head of the table,

watching her with quiet pride,

as the hostile board members shifted nervously.

The man leading the charge against her,

a wealthy investor named Harrison,

smirked as she took her seat.

He began laying out his accusations,

tossing fabricated bank statements on the table,

claiming the foundation was a parasite.

He used words like liability,

and emotional investment,

trying to make Claire look incompetent.

Claire let him finish his speech,

never interrupting,

never showing a single ounce of fear.

When the room fell quiet,

she opened her own leather binder,

and pulled out a single flash drive.

She plugged it into the projector,

and the screen flickered to life,

displaying a very different set of records.

They were Harrison's private emails,

messages he thought were deleted,

proving he had hired offshore hackers,

to fabricate the foundation's financial discrepancies.

Harrison turned pale,

his smug smile vanishing instantly,

as the other board members backed away.

Claire leaned forward,

her voice ringing clear across the room,

sharp enough to cut glass.

She reminded them that invisible people,

the ones who empty the trash,

and maintain the servers late at night,

are fiercely loyal to those who protect them.

Harrison had mistreated his IT staff,

and Claire's foundation had helped them,

which meant they were more than happy,

to provide the evidence she needed.

Grant stood up slowly,

buttoning his suit jacket,

and looked down at Harrison.

He informed the board that Harrison's shares,

would be bought out immediately,

and that security would escort him out.

Claire gathered her papers,

feeling a profound sense of victory,

not just for herself,

but for every woman her foundation served.

As they left the building together,

Grant took her hand in the elevator,

his thumb tracing her knuckles.

He told her she was terrifying,

and he meant it as the highest compliment.

Claire smiled up at him,

knowing that in their world,

May you like

being terrifying was sometimes necessary,

to protect the ones you love.
