Chapter 7

Spring brought heavy rains to Chicago,

washing the streets clean,

and making the city slick and gray.

Claire was working late at the foundation,

reviewing a stack of legal aid applications,

when her assistant cautiously entered the office.

There was a man at the front desk,

bedraggled and asking for Claire by name,

refusing to leave until he spoke to her.

The assistant handed Claire a slip of paper,

and the name written on it,

made Claire's blood run cold.

It was Tyler.

He had been released from federal prison,

having served his time for the embezzlement,

and the conspiracy with Vanessa.

Claire's first instinct was to call security,

to have him thrown out into the rain,

and to alert Grant immediately.

But she looked at the silver cross on her desk,

a symbol of grace and endurance,

and decided she needed to face him herself.

She told her assistant to send him in,

but instructed security to stand right outside the door,

ready to intervene at a moment's notice.

Tyler walked in slowly,

looking nothing like the polished, arrogant man,

who had once planned to marry her.

His clothes were cheap and worn,

his face was lined with deep exhaustion,

and his shoulders slumped in defeat.

He did not ask for money,

and he did not offer pathetic excuses,

which surprised Claire slightly.

He stood awkwardly in the center of the room,

twisting a wet cap in his hands,

and looked at the floor.

He had come to apologize,

truly and finally apologize,

for abandoning her when she needed him most.

He admitted he had been weak,

intimidated by Vanessa's cruelty,

and corrupted by his own greed.

Prison had stripped away his illusions,

leaving him with nothing but regret,

and the heavy weight of his mistakes.

Claire listened in silence,

remembering the pain he had caused,

but feeling no anger left in her heart.

She saw a broken man,

someone who had lost everything,

while she had gained the world.

She told him that she forgave him,

not for his sake,

but for her own peace of mind.

She wished him a better life,

but firmly stated that he could never contact her,

or her family ever again.

Tyler nodded,

tears mixing with the rain on his face,

May you like

and quietly walked out the door,

leaving Claire feeling lighter than ever before.
