Chapter 15

The flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers illuminated the rainy street. The storm had finally begun to pass, leaving behind a cold, damp silence. Paramedics treated Ryan's arm in the back of an ambulance. It required stitches, but it wasn't life-threatening. Marcus had been found in the kitchen. He had taken a blunt force blow to the back of the head, but he was conscious and cursing loudly as the medics checked his pupils. Arthur was hauled out of the house in handcuffs. He was conscious but disoriented from Emily's blow. He didn't fight. He didn't speak. He just stared blankly ahead as they pushed him into the back of a police car. Detective Miller took Ryan's statement in the living room. "He's looking at attempted murder, breaking and entering, and a dozen other charges," Miller said, closing his notebook. "He's never seeing the outside of a cell again, Mr. Cole." "I promise you that." Ryan nodded tiredly. "Thank you, Detective." When the police finally left, the house felt incredibly empty. The power company had restored electricity, and the warm glow of the lamps felt almost jarring after the chaos of the dark. Ryan walked upstairs to the twins' bedroom. Emily was sitting on the edge of the bed. Oliver and Olivia were fast asleep, exhausted by the fear and the late hour. Ethan was asleep in his own room down the hall. Ryan sat down next to Emily. He looked at the bandage on his arm, then at the broken doorframe down the hall. "We'll need a carpenter tomorrow," he said quietly, trying to make a small joke to break the tension. Emily leaned her head against his shoulder. "I was so scared, Ryan." "When I heard him on the stairs..." "I thought we were going to lose everything." Ryan wrapped his good arm around her. "We didn't." "You saved us, Emily." "You stopped him." Emily looked at her hands. They were clean now, but they had been shaking for an hour. "I didn't even think." "I just knew he wasn't going to touch my family." She looked up at Ryan. "Our family." Ryan smiled softly. "Our family." He kissed the top of her head. "Victoria sent that letter to destroy us." "She wanted us to fracture." "She wanted us to run." "But she was wrong." "All she did was prove how strong we actually are." Emily nodded. The fear was entirely gone now. Replaced by a profound sense of peace. They had faced the ghosts of the past. They had looked the monster in the eye. And they hadn't blinked. Over the next few weeks, the damage to the house was repaired. The broken door was replaced. The security system was upgraded again, more for peace of mind than actual need. Arthur was denied bail. He was transferred to a maximum-security psychiatric facility awaiting trial. He would never be a threat again. The children bounced back with the incredible resilience of youth. Oliver decided the power outage was an "awesome adventure." Olivia drew a picture of Emily holding a giant block of wood, labeling it "Mom the Superhero." Ethan framed the picture and hung it in the hallway. Life returned to normal. But it was a new kind of normal. It was a normal built on absolute trust. They had survived the fire, and they had walked out together.
