Chapter 16

Six months later, the final chapter closed quietly. Ryan received a phone call from the prison hospital. Victoria had passed away during the night. There was no grand realization. No final confession. Her heart had simply stopped beating. When Ryan told Emily the news, she didn't celebrate. She didn't cry either. She simply took a deep breath, letting out the last breath of tension she had been carrying for years. "It's really over," she whispered. Ryan nodded. "It's over." They didn't attend the funeral. Victoria was buried in a small, private ceremony arranged by the state. She left nothing behind but bad memories, and those memories were finally fading. Spring arrived with a burst of color. The oak tree in the backyard bloomed with bright green leaves. The weather grew warm, chasing away the last chills of the long winter. It was a Saturday afternoon. The backyard was filled with people. Marcus was there, grilling hotdogs and arguing with Oliver about baseball statistics. Detective Miller had stopped by briefly to drop off a small gift. It was Ethan's thirteenth birthday. He was officially a teenager. His latest test results had come back completely clear. The doctors had used the word "remission" for the first time. Ethan was currently trying to teach Olivia how to throw a frisbee. She was terrible at it, but she laughed every time it landed in the bushes. Ryan stood on the porch, holding a glass of lemonade. He watched the scene unfold before him. He thought about the night he had broken down the nursery door. He thought about the bruised, terrified woman he had found tied to a bed. He looked at Emily now. She was laughing, her face glowing in the afternoon sun. She looked beautiful. She looked free. Emily walked over to him, handing him a fresh napkin. "You're staring again," she teased gently. Ryan smiled. "I'm just appreciating the view." Emily leaned against the porch railing, looking out at the children. "It's been a long road, Ryan." "Yes, it has." "Do you ever think about the past?" Ryan shook his head. "Not anymore." "There's too much to look forward to." He reached out, taking her hand. "Ethan is healthy." "The twins are happy." "And I have you." Emily squeezed his hand. "We survived it all." "We did more than survive," Ryan corrected her. "We built something real." From across the yard, Oliver yelled out. "Dad!" "Mom!" "Come play!" Emily laughed, pulling Ryan toward the grass. "Coming!" Ryan followed her, leaving his glass on the porch. He didn't look back at the house. He didn't need to. The house was just a building. His home was right here. Walking beside him in the sunlight. The shadows were completely gone. And for the first time in his life, Ryan knew with absolute certainty that tomorrow would be a good day. And the day after that. And every day to come.
