Chapter 7

The house was entirely silent. Only the faint ticking of the grandfather clock echoed in the hallway. Ryan sat alone in his dark study. His desk lamp cast a long, trembling shadow across the wooden floor. He stared at the small envelope. The one that had slipped beneath Victoria's letter. Open Alone Tonight. Those three words felt like a threat. He waited until he was certain everyone was asleep. Emily had taken the twins upstairs hours ago. Ethan had gone to bed shortly after. Ryan took a deep breath, trying to steady his racing heart. He picked up the small envelope. The paper was thick, expensive, and cold to the touch. He slid his thumb under the flap, breaking the seal. Inside was a single, folded piece of paper. He opened it slowly. The handwriting was erratic, much different from the elegant script on the first letter. It read: You thought you took everything from me. You thought you won. But you only saw half of the board. Ryan frowned, reading the words again. My brother never forgave you. Arthur is coming. He blames you for my illness, for my ruined reputation, and for the loss of the life I deserved. Ryan felt a sudden chill run down his spine. Arthur. He remembered the name faintly. Victoria had mentioned a brother once, years ago, before they were married. She had claimed he was dead. A tragic accident, she had said, with tears in her eyes. It had been another lie. The letter continued. He doesn't want money. He doesn't want justice. He wants you to feel what I felt. He wants to take your future. He has been watching the children. Ryan stopped reading. His blood ran cold. He stood up abruptly, knocking his chair backward. It hit the floor with a loud thud. He didn't care. He rushed to the window, peering out into the dark yard. The security lights were on. Nothing moved in the shadows. But the feeling of being watched crept over him. He looked back at the letter. Check the photos, the final line read. Ryan looked inside the envelope again. There were three small photographs tucked at the very bottom. He pulled them out with trembling hands. The first photo was of Oliver. He was standing at the school gate, laughing with a friend. The picture was taken from across the street. The second photo was of Olivia. She was at the park, chasing a butterfly. The angle was from behind a large oak tree. The third photo made Ryan's breath hitch. It was Ethan. He was sitting in his hospital bed, smiling at a nurse. The photo had been taken from inside the hospital. Someone had been that close. Someone had been walking the same halls. Breathing the same air. Ryan placed the photos on the desk. His hands curled into fists. Five years of peace, shattered in an instant. He turned toward the door. He needed to check the security system. He needed to lock every window. But most importantly, he needed to tell Emily. He wouldn't hide this from her. Not anymore. No more secrets. No more silent burdens. They were a family. And they would face this together. He walked quietly up the stairs. The floorboards creaked under his weight. He stopped outside the twins' room. He opened the door just a fraction. Oliver was sprawled across his bed, snoring softly. Olivia was curled into a small ball, holding her favorite blanket. They were perfectly safe. For now. Ryan closed the door gently. He walked down the hall to Emily's room. He knocked softly. There was no answer. He knocked again, a little louder this time. The door opened a crack. Emily stood there, rubbing her eyes. "Ryan?" She whispered, confused by the late hour. "What's wrong?" Ryan looked at her, his face completely pale. "We have a problem," he said quietly. "A very big problem." Emily's sleepiness vanished instantly. She opened the door wider. "Show me."
