Chapter 4 - The Wife Who Smiled While Everything Burned

Sophia Rossi arrived at the townhouse that evening in a cream coat, carrying a gift bag for Mia. She found Clara in the library and stopped smiling.
"The schoolteacher," she said. "I suppose this is what my husband calls charity now."
"Your daughter is upstairs," Clara replied. "You might want to lower your voice."
Sophia's gaze flickered. "You don't understand the people you're dealing with."
"I'm beginning to."
Leo entered. "Sophia, we need to talk about Adrian."
"My brother has kept your business solvent while you played respectable businessman."
"My business," Leo said, "has been paying for crimes I never authorized."
Sophia set down the gift bag. "You think you can leave the old world without consequences?"
Clara watched her carefully. There was anger in Sophia's voice, but underneath it, something closer to panic.
Elena brought in photographs of the escrow transfer and the threatening message. Sophia went white at the image of Mia.
"Adrian said he'd never involve her," she whispered.
Leo's voice turned dangerously quiet. "What did you give him?"
"Access codes. Contract files. I thought he was only moving money."
"And David?" Clara asked.
Sophia looked at her with sudden shame. "He said he could help me get away. He said he had proof Adrian was stealing from Leo. I was stupid enough to believe him."
Clara understood the humiliation, but sympathy did not erase betrayal.
"You knew David was married," she said.
"Yes."
"Then don't make yourself the victim of that choice."
Sophia nodded, tears bright in her eyes. "You're right."
That night, the museum called. Someone had broken into the locker and destroyed its contents. Clara and Elena had removed the tape in time, but Adrian now knew where the trail led.
Leo wanted to move Mia to a guarded estate. Clara argued for notifying the authorities and using the threat as evidence. Their disagreement erupted in the kitchen while rain tapped against the windows.
"You don't understand what he can do," Leo said.
"And you don't understand what happens when everyone is too frightened to testify."
"I won't gamble with my daughter."
"Neither would I. But hiding forever is a gamble too."
He looked exhausted. "You think I'm the same as him."
"I think you have the power to choose whether you become him."
Leo stepped away. A long silence followed.
Finally he picked up his phone and called a federal prosecutor Elena trusted. He offered the contracts, the threatening messages, and his own testimony under oath.
When he hung up, he looked at Clara. "There. No more private war."
"That may be the bravest thing you've done," she said.
He gave a rueful laugh. "I was hoping you wouldn't notice how terrified I am."
"I'm terrified too."
May you like
They stood beside the kitchen counter, close enough to touch but careful not to. Neither had finished leaving a marriage. Neither wanted to turn pain into another betrayal.
For now, standing together was enough.
