Chapter 5 - The Night the Harbor Went Dark

The federal meeting was scheduled for dawn at a government building near the river. It never happened.
At 4:12 a.m., the townhouse lost power. Security lights flickered, and the backup generator failed. Matteo found a cut cable in the alley. Someone had known exactly where to strike.
Clara woke to Mia knocking on her door.
"There's a man outside my window," the girl whispered.
Clara scooped her into her arms and moved into the interior hallway. She called Leo, who was already coordinating with the security team. A crash sounded downstairs. Then a voice called from the darkness: "We only want the tape."
Clara held Mia closer. "Stay quiet," she murmured. "Count backward from one hundred."
They hid in a linen closet while Matteo guided police toward the house. The minutes stretched until Clara could hear her own heartbeat. Mia counted softly against her shoulder.
When officers finally reached them, the intruders had fled. One had dropped a burner phone with a single unsent message: HE HAS THE GIRL.
But Mia was safe. The message had been intended for someone else.
Leo arrived at the closet doorway, his face bloodless. He knelt and held his daughter until she complained that he was squeezing too hard.
Later, Elena explained that the intruders had been sent to recover the cassette. Their employer apparently believed Leo had already moved Mia. The attackers had prepared a false kidnapping report to draw him into a trap at the harbor.
Clara recognized the location named in the phone's draft: Pier 19, a terminal connected to the redevelopment scheme.
"The inventory," she said suddenly. "My father wrote down archival box numbers, not account numbers. He wasn't hiding one ledger. He was identifying original permits."
They compared the numbers with scanned city records. Each box corresponded to a parcel acquired after a suspicious fire or forced sale. One parcel included Pier 19, where Daniel had worked as a summer dock clerk before becoming an investigator.
"The evidence may be in the pier's original maintenance office," Clara said. "He used to take me there to watch the ferries."
The prosecutor ordered a search warrant. Leo wanted to accompany the agents, but Elena warned him that Adrian might be counting on his presence.
"Then I'll stay with Mia," Leo said. "For once, someone else can be the hero."
Clara was surprised by how much she respected him for that.
That afternoon, David appeared outside the police station asking to speak to Clara. He looked as though he hadn't slept in days.
"Adrian's going to kill me," he said. "I kept copies of the transfer records. I'll give them to you if you help me."
"I'll get you a lawyer," Clara said. "And you can tell the prosecutor everything."
"You'd do that after what I did?"
May you like
"I'm not doing it for you. I'm doing it so nobody else gets hurt."
David lowered his eyes. For the first time, he seemed to understand the difference.
