Chapter 8 - The Trap Beneath Pier Nineteen

Adrian disappeared before agents could arrest him. His accounts were frozen, his offices searched, and his photograph circulated. For forty-eight hours, the city held its breath.
Then Rose Bennett vanished on her way home from the grocery store.
Clara received a video showing her mother seated in a bare room, frightened but unharmed. Adrian's voice instructed her to come alone to Pier 19 with the original cassette. No police. No Leo.
Clara forwarded the video to Mara before she did anything else.
"We can track him," the prosecutor said. "But you must not go in alone."
"I won't," Clara promised.
The operation was planned around a controlled exchange. Clara would carry a duplicate cassette. Agents would cover the pier, and a rescue team would locate Rose. Leo wanted to join them; Clara refused.
"If you go in angry, he'll use it," she said. "Mia needs you alive."
He swallowed hard and nodded.
The pier was a forest of rusted beams and empty containers. Rain slid from the roof in silver threads. Clara walked into the old maintenance office with the cassette in her coat pocket.
Adrian stepped out from behind a desk. His silver signet ring flashed in the dim light.
"Daniel's daughter," he said. "He was just as stubborn."
"Where's my mother?"
"Safe for the moment. Give me the recording."
Clara placed the cassette on the desk. "My father trusted the records more than threats. That's why you couldn't stop him."
Adrian smiled. "Your father died because he didn't understand how the world works."
"He died saving Mrs. Flores. She told me."
For a moment, Adrian's expression faltered. He hadn't known the custodian survived.
"The evidence is already with the prosecutor," Clara continued. "There is nothing you can burn that will change it."
A noise sounded outside. Adrian grabbed Clara's wrist and pulled her toward the back door. She twisted free, knocking over the desk lamp. Its crash was the signal the agents had been waiting for.
Officers entered from two directions. Adrian ran, but the far exit was blocked. He was arrested beneath the same beams that had concealed his stolen records.
Rose was found in a nearby office, shaken and furious. She embraced Clara so tightly that neither could speak.
At the hospital, Leo arrived with Mia's drawing of a fox holding a shield. He waited until Rose was settled before approaching Clara.
"You kept your promise," he said.
"So did you."
He looked at her bruised wrist, then met her eyes. "I was scared I'd lose you."

Clara felt the weight of everything they had survived. "I was scared too."
He didn't kiss her. Instead, he took her hand when she offered it, and they sat together until the sun rose over the river.
