Chapter 4 - A Marriage Contract with a Hidden Escape Door

Norah demanded that Arthur hire an attorney who did not work for the Costa organization. He agreed and brought in Evelyn Price, a former federal prosecutor known for refusing wealthy clients who expected obedience. Evelyn reviewed the marriage paperwork and discovered an alarming provision: Richard had signed a separate agreement purporting to transfer rights over Norah's future earnings and personal decisions. It was unenforceable, Evelyn explained, but it showed the extent of his intentions.

Arthur had never seen the document. He had authorized payment of Richard's debt, not ownership of Norah. He apologized, then offered to annul the marriage immediately if Norah wished. She considered the offer. The children had begun to trust her, and she had begun to trust herself in their presence. But staying could not mean surrendering her freedom. She told Arthur that she would remain only if they rewrote their arrangement as equals, with her own funds, legal representation, and an unconditional right to leave.

Arthur signed the revised agreement without negotiating a single clause. Norah felt the first fragile shift between them. He was still a dangerous man, and his world remained full of compromises she despised. Yet when confronted with a choice between controlling her and letting her decide, he had chosen the latter.

Meanwhile, Mia announced that she would perform in a school recital. She claimed it was only because her music teacher had threatened to fail her. Norah understood the deeper truth when she found Elena's old sheet music on Mia's bed. Mia had been burning copies because she could not bear to play the song her mother once practiced with her. Norah suggested choosing a different piece. Mia insisted on playing Elena's favorite, but asked Norah to sit in the second row rather than the front. 'So I can see you without everyone noticing,' she said.

At the recital, Arthur arrived late, his sleeve marked by blood from an ambush at a warehouse. He stood in the rear, refusing to disturb the performance. Mia saw him and missed a note. Then she found Norah in the second row and continued. Afterward, Arthur praised her courage. Mia whispered that she had been terrified. He replied that courage was not the absence of fear. It was continuing while afraid.

Outside the auditorium, Gabriel appeared with news that a Costa truck had been seized by a rival crew. Arthur ordered an investigation. Norah saw Gabriel glance at the children before speaking, as though assessing who had heard. She mentioned the forged inventory authorization. Gabriel replied too quickly that the archive was unreliable. Norah said nothing, but Evelyn later agreed that Gabriel's access to both the security records and the family possessions made him a person of interest.

That evening Norah found Arthur alone in Elena's garden, where winter had stripped the roses to thorns. He admitted that the marriage had begun as a transaction he now regretted. Norah said she regretted allowing her father to decide what she was worth, not the decision to walk through Arthur's gates. Arthur asked permission to hold her hand. She gave it. For several minutes they stood quietly in the cold, neither pretending that tenderness could erase the danger surrounding them.
