Chapter 5 - The Daughter Who Remembered the Red Car

Lily began speaking in fragments. Her first word was not Mommy or Daddy. It was 'red.' Norah heard it while they were painting at the kitchen table. She did not call the entire household to witness the moment. She simply answered, 'Yes, that's red,' and continued painting. Later Lily said 'car' and drew a small square beside it. Norah told Arthur privately, and he wept where the children could not see.

A child trauma specialist, Dr. Mercer, began visiting the estate. She cautioned against questioning Lily as though she were a witness on trial. Memories formed under extreme fear could be fragmented, and adults could unintentionally influence what a child reported. Norah agreed. She handed over the drawings, preserved their dates, and let the specialist lead.

Evelyn's investigators located a traffic-camera image from the night of the bombing. A red sedan had passed the Costa vehicle shortly before the explosion. Its registration led to a shell company tied to Richard Hayes. The evidence did not prove who had planted the bomb, but it shattered the assumption that the attack had involved only Arthur's enemies.

Richard called Norah from an unfamiliar number. He claimed Arthur was manipulating her and offered to reveal the truth about Elena if Norah came alone to the Continental. Norah recorded the call and gave it to Evelyn. She refused to meet without counsel. Richard became furious, then said something strange: 'You think that little girl remembers everything? She remembers what we let her see.'

Arthur wanted to confront Richard immediately. Norah stopped him. An impulsive attack would bury evidence, frighten the children, and hand their enemies a public justification for retaliation. Arthur argued that patience had never kept his family safe. Norah answered that revenge had not brought Elena home. He left the room, angry, but returned an hour later to apologize.

That weekend the family visited a lakeside cabin under discreet protection. Sam taught Norah to skip stones, though he was not very good at it. Leo grudgingly showed her how to cast a fishing line. Mia complained about the cold and then laughed when Arthur fell into the shallow water while trying to retrieve Sam's hat. Lily stood beside Norah and whispered, 'Daddy wet.' Everyone laughed, including Arthur.

At night Norah told Arthur she had once imagined motherhood only as something her body had failed to provide. The children had complicated that grief. She still mourned the future she might never have, but she was beginning to understand that love could take forms no diagnosis could predict. Arthur told her that she was already changing their lives, and that he wanted her to stay for herself, not because the children needed a caretaker. They kissed, gently and without promises they could not yet keep.

The next morning Evelyn called. Gabriel Voss had emptied a private bank box and disappeared. The box had been rented under a false name, but its access log contained one more signature: Diane Hayes.
