Chapter 7 - Four Children, One Missing Father, and a Deadly Lie

Gabriel struck at the one vulnerability Arthur could never conceal: his children. A forged message, apparently sent by the school, directed the Costa driver to collect Mia and Sam from an alternate entrance. The driver recognized the unusual instruction and called home. Before he could move the vehicle, two masked men blocked the lane. Security intervened and the children escaped unharmed, but Arthur understood how close the family had come to catastrophe.
Norah refused to let the children believe the danger was their fault. She explained that adults had made dangerous choices and that the family was changing its routines to keep everyone safe. Mia asked whether they would have to leave Chicago forever. Norah promised only what she could control: wherever they went, the adults would tell them the truth appropriate to their ages and listen when they were afraid.
Evelyn arranged for federal investigators to receive copies of the ledger and Diane's messages. Arthur hesitated. Cooperation would expose his own organization's crimes. Norah told him that protecting his children could not mean protecting every secret that had made their world dangerous. After a long night, Arthur agreed to provide documents about the foundation fraud and the bombing, with counsel present. He also began separating legitimate businesses from criminal operations, knowing that accountability would come with real costs.
Gabriel contacted Arthur and demanded a meeting at an abandoned freight terminal. He claimed to have Elena's watch and the name of the person who ordered the bombing. Arthur suspected a trap but went with investigators coordinating surveillance from a distance. Norah remained at the safe house with the children. She hated waiting, but she knew rushing into the terminal would help nobody.
At the terminal Gabriel appeared carrying a small velvet pouch. Inside lay Elena's watch, the clasp scratched exactly as Leo had described. Gabriel claimed Richard had ordered the attack. Arthur asked why Gabriel had taken the watch. Gabriel replied that Elena had hidden a memory card beneath its backing. Before he could explain further, shots rang out from the upper level. Gabriel fell behind a concrete barrier. Arthur escaped through a side passage as investigators moved in. The shooter vanished, but a dropped phone connected him to a contractor working for Richard.

When Arthur returned, Lily ran into his arms and said, clearly, 'Don't go away.' He held her and promised that he would always tell her when he needed to leave. He did not promise that danger could never touch them again. Norah watched him choose truth over comforting fiction.
The memory card contained an audio recording made by Elena shortly before her death. She described discovering that Richard and Gabriel had diverted foundation money and used Costa freight shipments to conceal it. She had arranged to meet a journalist, but feared someone had learned of the appointment. Her final words were for Arthur and the children: 'If anything happens to me, tell them I tried to come home.' Arthur listened once, then sat in silence until dawn.
