Chapter 2 - The Forged Signatures, the Midnight Interrogation, and the Fortress Behind the High Walls

The flashing red and blue lights of the local police cruisers cast frantic shadows across the marble foyer of Damián Roca’s estate. I stood frozen in the center of the room, my daughters sleeping safely upstairs in a suite that looked like it belonged to a fairy tale, while the cold reality of Ofelia Ferreira’s vengeance threatened to drag me back into the nightmare. The two police officers looked uncomfortable. They knew whose house they were in; in Jalisco, stepping onto Damián Roca’s property uninvited was a gamble with one’s life. Yet, Ofelia’s political clout and deep-pocketed bribes had given them the audacity to come knocking with an arrest warrant and an emergency custody order.

Damián did not raise his voice. He did not reach for a weapon. He simply walked down the grand staircase holding a cup of black coffee, wearing a dark silk robe over his tailored trousers. He looked down at the manila folder held out by the sweating senior patrol officer. "Let me see the documents," Damián said, his tone casual, almost conversational. The officer nervously handed over the folder. Damián flipped through the twelve wire transfer forms. Each document bore my signature, perfectly duplicated down to the slight downward slope of the final letter. To any bank clerk or investigator, it would pass without a second glance.

"She emptied the foundation’s charity accounts over the past four months," the officer recited from memory, clearly reading from a script provided by Ofelia's legal team. "Three million pesos transferred to an offshore account in the Caymans under Camila's maiden name. Señora Ferreira wants her detained immediately, and the children placed under her temporary guardianship pending family court." Damián didn't look at the officer. He looked at me, his sharp eyes reading every tremor in my hands, every ounce of exhaustion in my eyes. He knew the truth before I even spoke.

"I never opened an offshore account," I whispered, my voice trembling with a mixture of terror and white-hot fury. "I don't even know what a Cayman account looks like. When Mateo was alive, I barely knew how to manage our grocery budget. She framed me. She had someone copy my handwriting from the inheritance waivers she forced me to sign when Mateo died!" Damián turned his gaze back to the officer. A cold, terrifying smile touched the corners of his mouth. "Officer," Damián said softly, "do you know what happens when someone brings forged documents onto my property under false pretenses?" The officer swallowed hard, beads of sweat forming on his brow. "Mr. Roca, we're just executing a court order—"

"A court order signed by Judge Morales," Damián interrupted, his voice dropping into a register that made the room's temperature feel like it had plummeted below freezing. "A judge whose gambling debts my organization purchased last Tuesday. You have ten minutes to clear my gates, tell Ofelia Ferreira that her little forgery trick was amateur work, and inform her that if her name is ever mentioned in the same sentence as Camila or her children again, I will personally audit every single ledger, bribe, and shell corporation the Ferreira family owns." The officers didn't hesitate. They backed out of the doorway, muttered apologies, and fled into the night, their sirens mercifully silent as they rolled down the driveway.
