Chapter 3 - The Fortress in the Bluffs

Gabriel’s private estate was nothing like the gaudy, marble-encrusted mansion Paige had expected from a high-ranking syndicate boss. It was a massive, brutalist compound constructed from poured dark concrete, heavy steel beams, and floor-to-ceiling ballistic glass, anchored dramatically into the side of a dense, forested cliff overlooking the ocean.
The armored Maybach passed through two heavily fortified security gates equipped with automated turret cameras before descending into a subterranean underground garage. A dozen men in tactical vests carrying automatic rifles moved about the garage with the casual ease of people for whom deadly military weapons were ordinary daily tools.
Gabriel stepped out of the vehicle first. He gestured to a middle-aged, stern-looking woman standing near the elevator bank. He instructed her to take Paige up to the east wing guest suite, have Helen provide her with comfortable, proper clothing, and bring her a heavy, warm meal immediately.
The east-wing suite was vast, offering sweeping panoramic views of the dark ocean below. The interior design was expensive, minimal, and almost entirely impersonal—dominated by slate gray furniture and warm ambient lighting. The moment the heavy oak door closed behind the staff, Paige’s remaining reserves of adrenaline completely evaporated.
She walked into the adjoining dressing room and caught sight of her reflection in a floor-to-ceiling mirror. It was a terrifying sight: her dark hair was unraveling from its intricate bridal pins, the heavy makeup on her face was cracking, and the enormous, suffocating Vera Wang wedding dress was still wrapped around her body like a gilded cage.
She reached frantically behind her back, trying to feel for the concealed zipper beneath the ninety tiny pearl buttons running down her spine. Her fingers were shaking too violently, and she couldn't reach the pull. The internal steel boning of the corset pressed mercilessly into her old rib injury, restricting her lungs. Her breathing became fast, shallow, and panicked. Colin had deliberately ordered the gown two sizes too small to control her body, forcing her to fast for three weeks prior to the wedding just to zip it up. His abusive hands had touched this fabric. His money had bought it.
She grabbed a pair of heavy brass tailoring scissors resting on the vanity table and tried to cut through the reinforced silk lining near her hip, but the heavy fabric resisted the blades. The claustrophobia closed in on her like a physical weight, suffocating her.
The suite door opened with two polite taps. Gabriel stepped into the dressing room, holding a glass of water. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw her standing in front of the mirror, tears of frantic frustration spilling down her face as she stabbed fruitlessly at the expensive silk gown with the brass scissors.
"Paige," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a low, steadying register. "Stop. Drop the scissors."
"Get it off me!" she gasped out, her chest heaving painfully. "I can't... I can't breathe! Get his dress off me!"
Gabriel set the water glass down on the marble vanity. He moved slowly, deliberately, keeping his hands visible so as not to startle her. He stepped up directly behind her in the mirror, gently taking the heavy brass scissors out of her trembling fingers and setting them far out of reach.
"Stand still," he commanded softly. "I've got it."
Paige froze, her breath hitching in her throat as she watched his reflection. Gabriel’s large, calloused hands moved to the top of her spine. With incredible, surprising patience, his thick fingers began unfastening the endless row of tiny pearl buttons one by one. He didn't rush. He didn't touch her skin unnecessarily. His movements were surgical, precise, and completely devoid of any improper aggression.
As the final button yielded, Gabriel carefully pulled the hidden zipper down. The reinforced steel corset instantly popped open, releasing its suffocating grip on her chest.
Paige let out a massive, shuddering gasp of air, her lungs expanding fully for the first time in ten hours. The heavy silk gown slid down her hips, pooling onto the floor around her feet in a massive white wave. She stood there in her simple silk slip, her shoulders shaking as she wept quietly from sheer, overwhelming relief.
Gabriel didn't stare. He immediately picked up a soft, thick dark velvet robe resting on the nearby armchair and draped it gently over her shoulders, covering her completely.
"Sit down," Gabriel ordered softly, guiding her to a velvet ottoman.
He handed her the glass of water. Paige took it with both hands, taking small, desperate gulps while Gabriel pulled a wooden chair over and sat down opposite her, crossing his arms over his chest.
"He controlled everything, didn't he?" Gabriel asked quietly, his dark eyes studying the pale bruises on her collarbone that had been hidden by the dress.
"He controlled my clothes, my food, my friends, my bank account," Paige whispered, staring down at the water. "When I ran away two years ago, I thought I was free. But he proved to me that no matter where I hide, he can just buy the ground I'm standing on."
"He bought your father," Gabriel corrected flatly. "He didn't buy you. And he certainly doesn't own this ground."
Paige looked up at him, her eyes fierce despite her tears. "And what about you, Gabriel? Are you just a bigger, scarier owner?"
Gabriel leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, bringing his face close to hers. "I don't own people, Paige. Ownership requires constant maintenance, paranoia, and cruelty. I run an empire based on contracts, respect, and absolute violence when necessary. You are not my property. You are my partner in a very specific, very lucrative demolition."
He reached into his pocket and placed a sleek, encrypted smartphone and a leather folder on the table between them.
"In that folder are the financial manifests for the Moretti-Rossy shipping ports," Gabriel explained. "Inside that phone are the direct cell numbers for my top lieutenants. Starting tomorrow morning, you will sit in my study, review Richard's real estate records, and show me where his family hides their unregistered cash flow. In return, I will give you complete physical protection, a legal team to scrub your father's debts permanently, and a clean identity with five million dollars in an offshore account the moment Colin is destroyed."
Paige looked at the phone, then at the folder, and finally into the dark, steady eyes of the most dangerous man on the East Coast.

She realized in that moment that Gabriel Rossy was not offering her a fairy-tale rescue. He was offering her something infinitely better: he was offering her a seat at the table to execute her own revenge.
She reached out her hand and picked up the phone. "Where do we start?"
