Chapter 4 - The War of Greybridge

Over the next three weeks, the quiet compound in the bluffs transformed into the war room for the complete destruction of the family empire.
Every morning at seven o'clock, Paige sat across from Gabriel at a massive oak desk in his glass-walled study. While rain lashed against the ballistic windows, Paige meticulously analyzed mountains of property deeds, corporate tax returns, and shipping invoices that Gabriel's intelligence team intercepted.
Her years spent forced to attend high-society galas and listening to Colin’s arrogant father boast about his business deals paid off with lethal precision. She remembered specific names of shell companies Richard mentioned over whiskey, identified hidden land holdings near the northern docks, and exposed a massive, illegal money-laundering scheme involving luxury art imports that Richard used to finance his political bribes.
Gabriel watched her work with growing, undisguised admiration. She was not merely surviving; she possessed a brilliant, sharp analytical mind that picked apart financial fraud with surgical speed.
"Here," Paige said one late evening, pointing her pen at a complex offshore ledger on her laptop screen. "Richard always used a private shell company called Aegis Holdings to purchase commercial property before municipal zoning laws were publicly announced. Look at the transaction dates. He's using insider information from the city council to buy up cheap land, then flipping it to his own development firm at a three-hundred-percent markup."
Gabriel leaned over her shoulder, reviewing the numbers, his broad chest brushing against her back. The scent of his cedar cologne filled her senses, no longer triggering fear, but a warm, powerful sense of absolute security.
"That's wire fraud and federal insider trading," Gabriel murmured, his low voice vibrating near her ear. "If we leak these unredacted ledgers to the Federal Organized Crime Task Force, the FBI will freeze all of Richard's corporate assets within twenty-four hours."
"And Colin?" Paige asked, turning her head to look up at him.
Gabriel’s eyes darkened with a cold, terrifying promise. "Colin has been desperately trying to secure a ten-million-dollar emergency loan from European investors to keep his father's firm afloat after the wedding scandal. Yesterday, my men intercepted his loan broker. Colin is broke, Paige. Without his father's stolen money, he is nothing."
Suddenly, the encrypted intercom on Gabriel’s desk buzzed loudly. Frankie, Gabriel's chief of security, spoke urgently over the speaker.
"Boss, we have a situation at the gate. An armored SUV just rammed the secondary security barrier. It's Colin."
Paige’s heart plummeted into her stomach, the old terror surging back instantly.
Gabriel didn't flinch. He calmly reached into his desk drawer, pulled out a sleek black pistol, and checked the chamber with a practiced click. He looked down at Paige, resting his hand gently on her shoulder.
"Stay inside this room," Gabriel instructed softly. "The glass is bulletproof. You are completely safe."
"Gabriel, be careful," she caught his arm, her voice laced with genuine concern. "He's desperate. Desperate men do crazy things."
Gabriel smiled a dark, dangerous smile, placing his hand over hers. "Desperate men make lethal mistakes. It's time to finish this."
Gabriel stepped out of the study, locking the reinforced door behind him.
On the wide concrete driveway outside the compound's main entrance, Colin stood beside a smoking, damaged SUV, holding a high-caliber assault rifle. His face was bruised and pale, his clothes disheveled, his eyes wild with unhinged rage. Three desperate mercenaries he had hired with his remaining cash stood beside him, weapons drawn.
Gabriel walked out onto the concrete terrace alone, his hands casually tucked into his suit pockets. A dozen of Gabriel’s heavily armed tactical guards silently emerged from the surrounding tree line, training laser sights directly onto Colin's chest.
"WHERE IS SHE?" Colin screamed, his voice cracking hysterically. "GIVE ME MY WIFE, ROSSY! YOU STOLE HER FROM ME!"
"She was never your wife, Colin," Gabriel replied, his voice remarkably calm, echoing across the rainy driveway. "And she certainly isn't your property."
"I PAID FOR HER!" Colin roared, raising the rifle toward Gabriel. "HER FATHER SOLD HER TO ME! SHE BELONGS TO ME!"
"She belongs to no one," Gabriel stated coldly. "And her father's debt was settled the moment I snapped your jaw on that altar."
Colin pulled the trigger in a blind rage.
BANG!
Before the bullet could even leave the barrel, Gabriel’s chief enforcer fired a single, suppressed shot from the upper balcony. The high-powered round struck Colin directly in his right shoulder, spinning him violently around and sending his assault rifle clattering onto the wet concrete.
Colin collapsed onto his knees, screaming in agony as he clutched his bleeding shoulder. His three hired mercenaries instantly dropped their weapons, raising their hands in absolute surrender as Gabriel’s tactical team moved in, pinning them to the ground.
Gabriel walked slowly down the concrete steps, stopping directly in front of the bleeding, groveling man. He looked down at Colin with pure, unadulterated contempt.
"You brought violence to my gates, Colin," Gabriel said softly. "You threatened the woman under my protection. For that, you should be buried in the woods."
"Please..." Colin wept, blood dripping through his fingers onto the wet driveway. "Please don't kill me... I'll leave! I'll leave the country!"
Gabriel pulled a sleek smartphone from his pocket and pressed play on an audio file, holding the speaker near Colin's ear.
The voice echoing from the phone belonged to a senior FBI agent, announcing that federal warrants had just been officially issued for Richard and Colin for multi-million-dollar federal racketeering, wire fraud, and domestic assault.

"Death is too clean for a coward like you," Gabriel informed him coldly. "You are going to spend the next thirty years in a maximum-security federal prison, where rich boys like you don't last a week."
Gabriel gestured to his men. "Call the federal marshals. Tell them we have a fugitive waiting for them at our gate."
