Chapter 2

He was mentally orchestrating the tactical sweep when the heavy oak door creaked open. It was not the squeaking cleaning cart, nor the sharp click of designer heels. It was a soft, muffled scrape followed by a heavy, wet footstep. Every lethal instinct Vincent had honed across twenty years of street wars and assassinations flared to life instantly.

The air in the room changed. It smelled of heavy rain, ozone, and fresh gun oil. Someone had successfully bypassed the perimeter security.

Vincent kept his breathing perfectly even, but his heart rate spiked. The bedside monitor betrayed him with a sudden, rapid chirp. He forced himself back into his rhythm: in for four, hold for four, out for four. The monitor steadied. A dark, towering shadow detached itself from the gloom of the medical equipment and crept toward the bed.

Vincent cracked his eyelids a millimeter. A man stood beside him clad in a dark raincoat, water dripping steadily from the hem onto the hardwood floor. In his right hand, he gripped a suppressed semi-automatic pistol, pointing it directly at Vincent's chest. With his left hand, the intruder reached for the feather pillow, intending to press it over Vincent's face to muffle the sound and catch the blood.

Vincent rapidly calculated his odds. Three days of total immobility had severely weakened his muscles, and his reaction time would be dangerously sluggish. Yet, if death was walking through the door, he refused to die like a trapped animal in bed. He tightened his core, preparing to lunge forward and shatter the assassin's windpipe with his bare hands.

Suddenly, the adjoining bathroom door clicked open.

Tessa stepped out into the room carrying a stack of fresh white towels. She froze dead in her tracks.

The assassin whipped around, his pistol instantly pivoting toward her chest.

Vincent's blood turned to ice. Run, his mind screamed. Drop the towels and run for your life!

Tessa did not run. Her eyes widened in absolute terror as she took in the armed gunman, the raised weapon, and Vincent lying helpless in the bed. Without a second thought, without training or hesitation, she hurled the entire stack of thick cotton towels directly into the assassin's face.

It was clumsy, inelegant, and completely uncalculated. But it worked.

The heavy fabric blinded the gunman instantly. His suppressed pistol discharged prematurely, the bullet shattering the EKG monitor right beside Vincent's head in a violent burst of sparks and flying plastic.

Cursing viciously, the assassin batted the towels away. But Tessa was already moving on pure adrenaline and desperate instinct. She grabbed the heavy cast-iron base of the IV stand and swung it with every ounce of strength in her slender body.

Clang!

Metal slammed against the intruder's ribs with a sickening crunch. The assassin stumbled backward, his gun hand dropping for a fraction of a second. Enraged, he lashed out with a brutal punch that caught Tessa squarely across the jaw. The impact threw her hard to the floor, and a thin line of blood instantly appeared at the corner of her split lip.

Vincent's hands curled into tight fists beneath the sheets. Every fiber of his being screamed for him to leap out of bed and slaughter the man, but he forced himself to hold position, waiting for the exact right opening.

The assassin sneered, turning his back on Vincent to loom over the fallen maid. "Stupid bitch," he spat, raising the pistol toward her head.

With a desperate lurch, Tessa's hand shot out across the floor, catching the heavy electrical cord of the broken EKG machine. She yanked with all her might. The rolling cart carrying the multi-thousand-dollar defibrillator tipped over, crashing down heavily across the assassin's legs.

The man shrieked as the heavy machinery crushed his shins, sending him crashing to the floor. The suppressed pistol flew from his grip, skidding across the polished wood to stop right beside Vincent's bedside.

Before the assassin could recover, Tessa threw herself onto his back with feral fury. She wrapped her arms tightly around his neck and sank her teeth deep into his ear. It was chaotic, ugly, and entirely devoid of movie-hero grace—yet it was breathtakingly brave.

Screaming in agony, the intruder thrashed backward, slamming Tessa hard against the concrete-reinforced wall. Her grip shattered instantly, and she slid limply to the floor, unconscious.

The assassin pushed the heavy medical equipment off his legs, gasping for air, and lunged wildly toward the pistol lying inches from Vincent's bed.

Vincent's eyes flew wide open. The game was over.
