Chapter 4

Panic flashed through her mind. Did the assassin find me? Am I dead?
The heavy oak door swung open gently, and Vincent Costa walked into the room. He wasn't wearing his usual clinical hospital gown or casual wear; he was sharply dressed in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, looking every bit the ruthless billionaire mob boss. Yet, there was something fundamentally different in his demeanor—the cold, icy aura that had terrorized New York for decades was entirely gone.
Tessa instinctively tried to sit up, wincing as her bruised ribs protested. "Mr... Mr. Costa?" she breathed, her voice trembling slightly. "Am I... am I in trouble?"
Vincent walked over, pulling up a velvet armchair beside her bed. He poured a glass of fresh water, held it out with surprising gentleness, and waited patiently until she took a sip.
"You are in no trouble whatsoever, Tessa," Vincent said, his voice deep and steady. "In fact, I owe you my life."
Tessa blinked, bewildered. "Your life? But... I just broke your IV stand and bit a guy's ear off..."
A rare, genuine smile touched the corners of Vincent's mouth—a smile nobody outside his inner circle had seen in over twenty years. "You threw a stack of towels into an armed assassin's face, smashed a multi-thousand-dollar defibrillator across his shins, and defended a man you believed was a helpless vegetable, all while knowing my syndicate had ruined your brother's bakery. That isn't just bravery, Tessa. That is profound integrity."
Tessa lowered her gaze, clutching the white bedsheets. "My brother Leo... he lost everything because of your men. I meant what I said the other night. You've caused a lot of pain, Mr. Costa."
"You are entirely right," Vincent acknowledged without a hint of defensiveness, stunning her into silence. "And I intend to fix that. As of this morning, the Elm district protection racket has been permanently dismantled. Furthermore, my legal team has already wired full restitution to your brother Leo in Cleveland, along with a deed to completely restore and restock his bakery, plus full ownership of the commercial block."
Tessa's eyes widened in sheer disbelief. Tears welled up in her eyes, spilling over her lashes. "You... you didn't have to do that..."
"I didn't have to," Vincent replied softly. "I chose to. Because my empire was built on darkness, and for the first time in my life, I want to build something lasting in the light." He paused, leaning forward slightly, resting his elbows on his knees. "Tessa, my estate operations manager position just opened up. It comes with full medical benefits, an exceptional salary, and complete autonomy over the household staff. More importantly... I need someone around me who isn't afraid to tell me the brutal truth when my judgment starts to slip."
Tessa stared at the most feared man in New York, realizing he was completely sincere. The walls she had built around herself to survive in a harsh city suddenly felt unnecessary. She wiped the tears from her cheek, a small, radiant smile breaking through.
"Does the job include picking out the music for the study?" she asked with a playful spark in her eyes.

Vincent chuckled, standing up and extending his hand toward her. "Only if you promise to keep playing John Coltrane instead of that heart monitor."
Tessa placed her small hand into his firm, warm grip. In that quiet moment, a powerful new chapter began—not forged in blood and extortion, but rooted in redemption, mutual respect, and an unbreakable bond.
