Chapter 1

Marcella Bellini did not cancel the marriage.
She could not.
Adrian and Vanessa had already exchanged vows forty minutes earlier.
The marriage was legal.
The reception was what ended.
Marcella instructed the venue to stop alcohol service, preserve every security recording, and allow legitimate vendors to collect what belonged to them.
She did not order Vanessa dragged outside.
She did not have Adrian detained.
She called her attorney.
That bothered several Bellini relatives more than the slap.
Vanessa was examined by a medic.
A swollen cheek.
A bruised shoulder from the guest-book station.
No serious injury.
Marcella gave a complete statement about striking her.
Vanessa had lunged for the handbag.
Marcella had already pulled it away and stepped between Vanessa and the bag.
Then Marcella slapped her.
Whether anger, defense of property, or both, Marcella did not pretend the strike had never happened.
Her attorney, Rebecca Sloan, arrived before midnight.
The first thing Marcella handed her was the cream envelope.
“Do not let Adrian touch this.”
Rebecca opened it carefully.
Inside was an executed deed transferring Marcella’s lakeside estate to Adrian and Vanessa as a wedding gift.
The property consisted of a large house, boathouse, guest cottage, and twelve wooded acres along Lake Mercer.
Appraised value:
Approximately $5.8 million.
Rebecca looked at Marcella.
“Did you deliver this deed to them?”
“No.”
“Did anyone else have possession?”
“No.”
“Was it recorded?”
“No.”
“Did Adrian know you were bringing it tonight?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“I told him.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Then until we confirm state law and the exact delivery circumstances, nobody treats this as transferred.”
Marcella sat in the private lounge.
Across the room, Rosa Bellini—Marcella’s older cousin—was sorting through wedding cards recovered from the floor.
Adrian stood outside the door with his own attorney.
He had asked four times to speak to Marcella.
Every request contained the same phrase.
The deed.
Not:
Is Mom okay?
Not:
Can I explain what Vanessa did?
Not:
I’m sorry I grabbed her bag.
The deed.
Rebecca noticed too.
“Why is he panicking about a wedding gift he just lost?”
Marcella stared at the envelope.
“That is exactly what I intend to find out.”
The answer began with a title search.
At 9:15 the next morning, Rebecca called.
“Marcella.”
“What?”
“There is already a deed on record.”
Marcella sat forward.
“What deed?”
“Lake Mercer.”
Her voice changed.
“Recorded four months ago.”
“To whom?”
Rebecca paused.
“Adrian Bellini and Vanessa Cole.”
Marcella did not speak.
Rebecca continued.
“It says you transferred the estate to them in May.”
Marcella looked at the cream envelope still lying on her desk.
“I did not.”
May you like
That was the first clue.
Adrian had panicked over Marcella’s original deed because county records already claimed she had given him the property months before.
