Chapter 11

Adrian eventually admitted his role.

Not immediately.

At first, his lawyers described the signature as a “premature execution process.”

The phrase lasted less than a week.

Forensic evidence showed the disputed signature had been lifted from Marcella’s earlier charity deed.

Computer metadata connected the image file to a Bellini Harbor Group laptop assigned to Adrian’s executive assistant.

The assistant testified Adrian asked for a clean scan of Marcella’s signature because he needed to “finish lake paperwork.”

She believed he had authority.

Vanessa then sent the image to the closing package.

Jennifer Malloy notarized the deed without Marcella appearing.

Adrian attended.

Those facts were difficult to euphemize.

Adrian’s statement changed.

He acknowledged knowing Marcella had not executed the May deed.

He acknowledged knowing the mortgage closed before genuine title transferred.

He insisted his intention had always been to correct everything at the wedding.

Marcella believed him.

That did not help him.

Intent to repair later did not create permission earlier.

Vanessa remained more defensive.

She argued she had relied heavily on Adrian.

Then investigators recovered messages where she explained the plan to Jennifer.

Vanessa knew exactly what was happening.

She had not invented Adrian’s business crisis.

But she was an active participant in using it to justify the false transfer.

The marriage began breaking under the investigation.

Adrian blamed Vanessa for escalating the plan.

Vanessa blamed Adrian for being too proud to ask his mother for money.

Both statements contained truth.

Neither erased their own decisions.

Marcella refused to referee their marriage.

When Adrian called her privately, she did not answer.

He sent:

Mom, she pushed this further than I wanted.

Marcella forwarded the message to Rebecca.

Then deleted it from her phone.

Not because she hated Adrian.

Because she refused to help him rebuild innocence by making Vanessa the sole villain.

He had been there when the deed was notarized.

He had spent the money.

He had grabbed his mother’s handbag at the wedding.

He was thirty-seven.

Adulthood did not disappear because someone else had a stronger personality.
