Chapter 4

The $3.4 million mortgage proceeds were divided across five destinations.
Rebecca expected luxury spending.
There was some.
$147,000 reimbursed wedding deposits Adrian and Vanessa had paid personally.
$86,000 went toward Vanessa’s event company.
But most of the money went somewhere else.
$2.2 million was transferred to Bellini Harbor Group.
Adrian’s company.
Marcella knew it well.
Adrian had founded it six years earlier to develop boutique hotels and waterfront restaurants.
Marcella invested nothing.
By Adrian’s choice.
He wanted something that did not belong to the Bellini family.
Marcella had respected that.
She had even been proud of it.
Now Rebecca showed her the company’s internal statements.
Bellini Harbor Group was in serious trouble.
One hotel renovation had run nearly forty percent over budget.
A restaurant project failed.
A private lender held a balloon note personally guaranteed by Adrian.
Payment due date:
Two days after the May Lake Mercer mortgage closed.
Marcella understood immediately.
“He used the lake house to save his company.”
“Looks that way.”
“Why didn’t he ask me?”
Rebecca did not answer because that was not her question to answer.
The remaining loan proceeds covered:
A tax arrearage.
Vendor obligations.
Vanessa’s company line of credit.
And $180,000 into a reserve account controlled jointly by Adrian and Vanessa.
Nothing suggested they planned to disappear with the money.
Nothing suggested they were secretly buying yachts.
The apparent motive was less glamorous.
They were drowning.
And they used property they expected Marcella to give them later as though expectation were ownership.
That made the betrayal more human.
Not smaller.
Marcella remembered conversations from spring.
Adrian saying:
“Business is tight but fine.”
Vanessa saying:
“He refuses to take help because he wants you to respect him.”
Marcella had answered:
“I already respect him.”
Apparently Adrian had not believed her.
Rebecca found one email from Adrian to his CFO.
No Bellini money. I’m not going to my mother at thirty-seven and asking her to rescue my company.
Three days later:
Lake transfer solves bridge issue.
The transfer had not happened.
But Adrian wrote as though it had.
His CFO replied:
Has Marcella executed?
Adrian:
Wedding gift confirmed. Paperwork being accelerated.
May you like
Accelerated.
That was the language he used for forging his mother’s deed.
