Chapter 10 - THE UNBROKEN FAMILY

The wedding guests were laughing and dancing near the glass pavilion, their joy echoing across the moonlit lawn of the Newport estate.
Ethan stared down at the handwritten note in his hand, his eyes darkening into pools of icy rage. His grip tightened around the paper until the edges crumpled in his fist.
"Ethan..." I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs as I looked at the letter. "She's in federal prison... how could she send this?"
Ethan took a slow, deep breath, turning his body to block the view of the paper from the wedding guests. He looked at me, his face filled with unwavering strength and protective resolve.
"Victoria may be behind bars, Clara, but her father's network had deep roots," Ethan said, his voice quiet but steady as rock. "She's trying to scare us from her cell. She wants to ruin tonight."
He reached out, taking my hand and lacing his fingers through mine.
"Look at me, Clara," Ethan commanded gently.
I looked up into his hazel eyes.
"Five months ago, I was a man living in fear, blind to the snake in my own house," Ethan said softly, his thumb caressing my palm. "But tonight, I am your husband. We are a family now. We have the federal authorities, we have security, and most importantly, we have each other. No note, no prison threat, and no ghost from the past is ever going to tear us apart again."
I looked at the ring on my finger, then at Ethan, and then over at little Leo, who was happily playing with my sister near the head table.
The fear that had gripped my chest began to melt away, replaced by a deep, unshakeable sense of empowerment. I was no longer the helpless maid standing alone in the nursery. I was Clara Vance—a mother, a wife, and a woman who had fought for her family and won.
"You're right," I said, my voice rising with newfound confidence. "We won't let her take our joy. Not tonight. Not ever."
Ethan smiled—a broad, breathtaking smile—and pulled the note from his hand, tossing it into a nearby stone fire pit where the flames consumed the paper in a flash of bright orange smoke.
"Let's go dance with our son," Ethan said, offering me his arm.
We walked back out onto the moonlit lawn, joining our guests under the sparkling string lights hanging from the trees.
Ethan scooped Leo up into his arms, and the three of us swayed together to the soft rhythm of the music. The ocean breeze blew gently around us, carrying the sweet scent of roses and salt water.
For the rest of the night, there were no shadows. Only laughter, warm toasts, and the undeniable warmth of a love that had survived the storm.
We knew that whatever mysteries lay in the past—whatever secrets Victoria was trying to weaponize—we would face them together. Hand in hand. As an unbroken family.
As the music faded into the quiet hum of the seaside night, Ethan leaned down, kissing my forehead softly.
"Ready for our next adventure, Mrs. Vance?" he whispered with a smile.
I looked up at my husband, holding his hand tight.
