Chapter 9 - THE SUNSET WEDDING

Six months later.

The golden light of a late afternoon sun painted the skies above the Newport coastline in brilliant shades of pink, gold, and lavender.

The rear lawn of the seaside estate had been transformed into a intimate, breathtaking wedding venue. White flower petals lined a wooden boardwalk aisle leading toward an archway made of white roses and driftwood overlooking the ocean.

Only thirty guests were seated on the lawn—close friends, trusted family, and my younger sister, Maya, who looked radiant in her bridesmaid dress. Ethan had kept his promise: Maya’s college tuition was fully paid, and she was thriving in her senior year.

Inside the estate's master suite, I stood before a full-length mirror.

I wore a simple yet elegant A-line gown of ivory lace with a sweetheart neckline and a delicate flowing train. My dark hair was styled in soft curls cascading down my back, pinned with small pearl clips.

There were no heavy shoulder drapes, no extravagant beaded patterns like the dress Victoria had worn. This dress was simple, pure, and uniquely mine.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

My sister Maya walked in, holding a small bouquet of white peonies and eucalyptus. She gasped, her hands covering her mouth as tears welled in her eyes.

"Clara..." Maya whispered, walking over to me. "You look absolutely stunning. Like a princess."

I turned to her, smiling warmly as I wrapped her in a hug. "Thank you, Maya. I'm so glad you're here."

"I wouldn't miss this for the world," Maya said, wiping a tear from her cheek. "After everything you've been through... after working so hard to take care of me... you deserve all the happiness in the world, Clara."

The door opened again, and Ethan's personal attorney, Mr. Harrison, stepped in, holding little Leo in his arms.

Leo was now a year old, walking on his own tiny feet, dressed in a miniature black tuxedo with a tiny satin bowtie. He looked so adorable that my heart melted instantly.

"Here's your ring bearer, Clara," Mr. Harrison smiled, handing the baby over to me.

"Look at you, my little prince," I cooed, kissing Leo's soft cheek. He giggled happily, reaching his tiny hands up to touch the pearls in my hair.

The soft string quartet music began to play from the lawn outside—the signal that the ceremony was about to begin.

Maya took my bouquet, and I grabbed my father's arm—he had flown in from Ohio, his eyes shining with pride as he looked at his daughter.

We stepped out onto the wooden boardwalk.

The ocean breeze caught my veil as I took my first step down the aisle.

At the end of the aisle, standing under the flower arch, was Ethan.

He looked impossibly handsome in his tailored navy tuxedo. As his eyes landed on me, his breath caught in his throat. Tears visibly shimmered in his hazel eyes, and a broad, beautiful smile spread across his face.

I walked toward him, my heart full to bursting.

When I reached the arch, my father placed my hand in Ethan's. Ethan's grip was warm, strong, and reassuring.

"You are the most breathtaking woman I have ever seen," Ethan whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

"You don't look too bad yourself, Mr. Vance," I whispered back with a wink.

The minister stepped forward, opening his book. "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today in the presence of God and these witnesses to join Ethan and Clara in holy matrimony..."

The ceremony was intimate, filled with heartfelt vows we had written ourselves.

"Clara," Ethan said, holding both of my hands as he looked into my eyes. "You came into my life during my darkest hour. You brought light back into my home, love back into my heart, and safety to my son. I promise to cherish you, respect you, and protect you for all the days of my life."

"Ethan," I said, my voice trembling with happy emotion. "You showed me what true honor and nobility look like. You saw me when I felt invisible, and you loved me for who I am. I promise to stand by your side, to build a home of love and laughter with you and Leo, forever."

"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the minister declared with a warm smile. "Ethan, you may kiss your bride!"

Ethan pulled me into his arms, dipping me slightly as he pressed his lips to mine in a passionate, joyful kiss.

The guests broke into enthusiastic applause and cheers.

Ethan stood me back up, wrapping his arm securely around my waist as we turned to face our guests, holding little Leo between us.

It was the happiest moment of my life.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, bathing the wedding reception in golden twilight, a waiter walked up to Ethan, holding a silver tray with a sealed beige envelope resting on it.

"Mr. Vance," the waiter said politely. "A courier just delivered this to the front gate. He said it was urgent and marked for your eyes only."

Ethan frowned slightly, picking up the envelope.

On the front of the envelope, written in sharp, familiar handwriting, were the words: FOR ETHAN & CLARA.

Ethan tore open the flap and pulled out a single sheet of paper.

My eyes scanned the handwritten note beside him.

“Congratulations on your wedding. But don’t get too comfortable in Rhode Island. Secrets don't stay buried forever—and your late wife’s death wasn't an accident. See you soon, Clara.”

Signed, V.

My blood ran cold as I looked up at Ethan.

The nightmare wasn't over. It was just beginning.
