Chapter 7 - THE MOTHER'S VENGEANCE

The peaceful morning air of the hospital garden suddenly felt suffocating.
Madame Kozlov stood just five feet in front of me near the edge of the stone fountain. She was in her late fifties, with sharp, angular features, icy blue eyes, and sleek dark hair pulled back into a tight bun. She wore an expensive black cashmere coat, and her hands were gloved in soft leather.
Behind her, standing near the garden exit gates, were two towering men in dark suits, their hands resting inside their jackets.
I instinctively took three steps back, clutching baby Leo tightly against my chest. My pulse raced wildly. "How did you get in here? The police are guarding the building!"
Madame Kozlov let out a cold, elegant laugh that sent shivers down my spine. "Police officers are easily distracted by a false security alarm in the parking garage, my dear. You are Clara, aren't you? The little servant girl who put my daughter in a federal holding cell."
"Your daughter tried to murder a baby!" I said, holding my ground despite the terror gripping my chest. "She set fire to a house! She's a criminal!"
"Victoria was reckless," Madame Kozlov said smoothly, taking a slow, calculated step toward me. Her voice was devoid of any maternal warmth—it was cold, sharp, and businesslike. "She let her emotions get the better of her. She should have handled you quietly months ago. But family is family, Miss Clara. And no one puts a Kozlov behind bars without paying a heavy price."
She looked down at baby Leo in my arms, her icy eyes narrowing into slits.
"My daughter wanted revenge," Madame Kozlov continued softly. "I want leverage. With that child in my possession, Ethan Vance will sign over his entire corporate portfolio and drop all federal testimony against Victoria within an hour."
"You won't touch him!" I yelled, backing up until my heels hit the stone rim of the fountain.
"Grab the girl," Madame Kozlov commanded flatly to the two men behind her.
The two heavy-set guards stepped forward rapidly, reaching out their large hands to grab my arms.
"Help!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, my voice echoing off the glass walls of the hospital atrium. "Help! Kidnapping!"
I twisted my body away, kicking out wildly with my foot, catching the first guard sharp in the shin. He grunted in pain, stumbling back, but the second guard grabbed my left shoulder, his fingers digging painfully into my skin as he tried to pry Leo out of my arms.
"Let go of him!" I shrieked, biting down hard on the guard's gloved wrist.
The guard yelled out in pain, releasing his grip for a fraction of a second.
I didn't hesitate. I spun around and sprinted back toward the heavy glass doors of the hospital atrium, my heart pounding like a jackhammer.
"Stop her!" Madame Kozlov barked from behind me.
I slammed my body against the automatic door sensors, bursting back inside the bright hospital lobby just as three uniform security guards came rushing around the corner, drawn by my screams.
"Miss! What's happening?!" the head security guard demanded, drawing his taser.
"Outside! In the garden!" I gasped, out of breath, pointing back through the glass doors. "They tried to take the baby!"
The security guards immediately drew their weapons and rushed through the glass doors into the garden, screaming orders for the suspects to halt.
Through the glass wall, I watched as Madame Kozlov and her two henchmen scrambled back toward their getaway vehicle parked outside the garden perimeter wall, screeching away into the city traffic just as police sirens began to wail in the distance.
I sank down onto a leather bench in the lobby, my whole body shaking uncontrollably. I pulled Leo's blanket back to check on him—the baby was wide awake, looking up at me with large, curious blue eyes, completely uninjured.
Footsteps came pounding across the marble floor of the lobby.
"Clara!"
Ethan came running out of the elevator bank, his white hospital gown partially covered by a leather jacket he had thrown over his bandaged shoulder. His face was pale with sheer terror, his hazel eyes wildly searching the room until they landed on me.
He skidded to a halt in front of my bench, dropping to his knees on the floor.
"Clara! Are you okay?! I heard the security alarm from upstairs!" Ethan gasped, taking my shaking hands in his.
"Ethan..." I sobbed, tears finally breaking free and streaming down my face. "It was Victoria's mother. She was in the garden. She tried to take Leo for leverage..."
Ethan's face transformed into an expression of raw, terrifying rage. The muscle in his jaw throbbed violently. He reached out and wrapped his arm around both me and Leo, pulling us tightly into his chest.
"They will never touch either of you again," Ethan growled, his voice thick with absolute resolve. "I swear it on my life."
He pulled out his phone, dialing a direct number. "Vance? It's Ethan. Victoria's mother just made a move at the hospital. I want full federal protection details assigned to Clara and my son immediately. And tell the board... I'm liquidating the entire Kozlov real estate holding group by noon today."

He hung up the phone and looked into my eyes, his touch soft and tender against my tear-stained face.
"Pack your things, Clara," Ethan said softly. "We're leaving Chicago today."
