Chapter 1 - The Swollen Cheek and the Secret Photo

Luca was hosting twenty-six high-profile guests at his luxurious mansion when he suddenly stopped right in front of me in the middle of the grand dining hall.
“Olivia, what's on your face?”
Before I could even open my mouth to answer, his fiancée, Vanessa, intervened with a sweet, fake smile that didn't reach her cold eyes.
“She hit her head on the kitchen cupboard,” Vanessa purred, waving her hand dismissively as if speaking about a broken saucer. “She's always so clumsy, she constantly ends up hurting herself.”
But that was a complete lie.
Vanessa had struck me across the face herself less than twenty minutes earlier, and she knew perfectly well that I was too terrified to tell the truth in front of her powerful guests. I was twenty-eight years old, barely making ends meet with my domestic worker salary, and I couldn't afford to lose this job. My sick mother’s medical bills depended entirely on the paycheck Luca Moretti paid his household staff.
Luca watched my swollen, bruised cheek with sharp, intense attention. His pale gray eyes narrowed into dangerous slits as he took a slow step closer to me, ignoring the hushed murmurs of the elite crowd around the mahogany dining table.
He tilted his head and asked me in a low, gravelly voice that sent a shiver straight down my spine:
“Are you going to lose your job for telling me the truth, Olivia?”
My heart hammered frantically against my ribs. I looked at Vanessa, whose knuckles were turning white as she clutched her crystal wine glass, her eyes flashing with a silent, lethal warning. I looked down at the polished marble floor, swallowing the copper taste of blood from my split lip.
“It... it was an accident, Don Luca,” I whispered, forcing my voice to stay level. “Just as Miss Vanessa said.”
Luca didn't press further in front of his guests, but the heavy silence that fell over the room was suffocating.
Later that same night, long after the twenty-six wealthy guests had departed and the mansion fell into a heavy stillness, Luca ordered his chief of security, Marco, to review the surveillance footage from every camera on the ground floor.
The high-definition digital images revealed something far more disturbing than a simple kitchen mishap.
The footage captured Vanessa entering an empty guest room in the west wing alongside a tall man in a dark trench coat. Shortly after, the camera caught Vanessa physically grabbing my arm in the corridor, forcing me into that exact same room against my will. A few moments later, I was seen stumbling out into the hallway, clutching my bruised face while the stranger slipped out through the side terrace doors.
Marco ran a facial recognition check on the stranger. His name was William Mercer—a dirty private investigator secretly hired by Vanessa three weeks prior.
But for what purpose?
At 1:30 AM, Luca called me to his private, dimly lit office on the second floor.
I walked into the mahogany-paneled room, my hands trembling inside my apron pockets. Luca sat behind his massive desk, his sleeves rolled up, his dark jaw clenched tight.
Without saying a word, I walked up to the desk, took out a creased photograph I had managed to snatch off the floor during my violent confrontation with Vanessa, and placed it firmly on the polished wood before him.
In the photograph, a younger Luca appeared standing alongside his ex-wife, Elena—a woman he hadn't spoken to or seen in almost four years following their bitter, high-profile divorce.
“Vanessa had an entire leather folder full of photographs in that guest room,” I explained in a low, raspy voice. “There were pictures of Elena, pictures of this house, of your sports cars, and even detailed surveillance shots of Elena’s private residence in Boston.”
Luca's expression darkened into pure, lethal stone as his fingers picked up the photograph.
The picture didn't show anything scandalous; it simply captured a private gathering related to an old lake house vacation property they had both once shared under a joint family trust. But in the hands of a skilled blackmailer, it could easily be manipulated.
Then I revealed the real reason why Vanessa had assaulted me in that guest room.
“She caught me picking up that photo after her investigator dropped his folder,” I said, looking straight into Luca’s gray eyes. “Vanessa ordered William Mercer to hand over those manipulated photographs to your ex-wife before your wedding next month. She wants to make Elena believe that you’ve been secretly deceiving her for five years—manipulating the old trust assets while keeping her under constant surveillance.”
Luca immediately picked up his satellite phone, tapping a speed-dial button.
“Find William Mercer,” Luca ordered his head of security in an icy tone that promised pure violence. “Bring him to the estate. And don't say a single word to Vanessa.”
He set the phone down and looked at me again with a firm, piercing stare that seemed to read my very soul.
“Olivia,” Luca asked softly, leaning forward. “Why would Vanessa care so much about involving my ex-wife in all of this? Elena lives three hundred miles away.”
My voice trembled as I revealed the final, terrifying secret I had overheard through the guest room door before Vanessa realized I was listening.
“Vanessa said your ex-wife still holds the original legal deed to the Moretti shipping docks,” I whispered. “She said that if Elena finds out you're getting married to a woman like her, Elena will execute the reversion clause in that deed... and turn the entire shipping empire over to the federal authorities out of spite.”

For the first time throughout the entire evening, the formidable Mafia boss, Luca Moretti, appeared truly, visibly shaken.
No matter what dark game Vanessa was playing, she had enough hidden leverage to endanger his entire multi-million-dollar criminal and legitimate future—turning his upcoming wedding into a catastrophic, irreversible nightmare.
