Chapter 3 - The Trap at the Marina

The fog over the South Port Marina was so thick it swallowed the dim yellow glow of the streetlights, turning the harbor into a ghostly landscape of dark water, creaking wooden docks, and silent yachts.
It was 3:45 AM.
Luca and I sat inside the bulletproof interior of a blacked-out SUV parked behind an abandoned fish-processing warehouse, two hundred yards from Pier 14. Marco and six heavily armed Moretti enforcers were already deployed in the shadows along the dock perimeter, their weapons fitted with silencers.
I wore a dark wool coat that Luca had given me from his private wardrobe, the heavy cashmere keeping out the biting ocean chill.
Beside me, Luca checked the magazine of a sleek black 9mm pistol with smooth, mechanical precision.
“Are you frightened, Olivia?” Luca asked softly, not looking up from his firearm.
“A little,” I admitted truthfully, clutching my hands in my lap. “I’m just a maid, Luca. I’m used to cleaning glass and folding linens, not watching mob shootouts.”
Luca paused, turning his head to look at me in the dim dashboard light. The cold, ruthless Don vanished for a moment, replaced by a man whose gaze held a deep, unshakeable respect.
“You are far more than a maid, Olivia,” Luca murmured, his voice rich and low. “You stood up to a dangerous woman when everyone else in my house bowed to her. You took a blow to the face to protect my family's legacy. You have more courage in your little finger than any of the high-society snakes who sit at my table.”
A warm flush rose to my cheeks, chasing away the cold fear in my veins.
Before I could answer, Marco’s voice crackled through the secure radio on the console:
“Don Moretti, hostile vessel approaching Pier 14. A luxury yacht registered to the Rossi family syndicate. Miss Vanessa’s vehicle just pulled onto the dock.”
Luca’s expression instantly transformed back into steel. “Hold positions until the transaction takes place. I want the buyer identified on camera.”
Through the tinted glass of our SUV, I watched as Vanessa’s silver Mercedes came to a stop near the edge of the wooden pier. She stepped out onto the wet planks, wearing a fur coat, carrying a sleek metal briefcase in her hand.
A tall man in a dark trench coat descended the gangplank of the yacht. As he stepped under the harbor lamp, my breath hitched in my throat.
I recognized him instantly from newspaper clippings I had dusted in Luca’s office.
It was Matteo Rossi—the ruthless leader of the Rossi crime family, Luca’s fiercest rival in the Midwest.
Vanessa opened the metal briefcase, revealing a thick stack of legal documents and the original unnotarized property deed to the Moretti docks.
“You have the offshore transfer codes?” Vanessa asked loudly over the hum of the yacht’s generator. “Twenty million dollars into my Swiss account, as we agreed?”
Matteo Rossi let out a harsh, arrogant laugh, reaching out to take the briefcase. “The codes will be activated the second my attorneys file this deed with the county registrar at sunrise. Luca Moretti will be bankrupt before breakfast.”
“I don't think so, Matteo.”
Luca’s deep, booming baritone echoed across the foggy pier like thunder!
In a fraction of a second, eight powerful floodlights mounted on Marco’s tactical trucks snapped on simultaneously, illuminating the pier in a blinding, artificial daylight!
Vanessa shrieked, dropping her fur coat in terror as a dozen Moretti enforcers stepped out from the fog, their weapons raised and aimed directly at Matteo Rossi’s chest!
Rossi’s bodyguards panicked, reaching for their sidearms—
THWIP! THWIP! THWIP!
Suppressed gunshots cut through the night! Rossi’s two guards dropped to the wet wooden planks, clutching their leg wounds, their weapons skittering into the dark water below!
Matteo Rossi froze, raising his hands slowly into the air, his face pale with utter shock as Luca stepped out of the shadows, looking like an avenging demon in his black coat.
I walked right beside Luca, keeping my spine straight, refusing to look away.
Vanessa stared at me, then at Luca, her eyes widening in pure, unadulterated horror as she realized her elaborate scheme had completely collapsed.
“Luca...!” Vanessa stammered out, her voice high and frantic. “Luca, baby! Please! It’s not what it looks like! He threatened me! Matteo forced me to steal those documents!”
Luca walked up to her, his face completely devoid of any emotion. He didn't yell. He didn't strike her. The sheer, absolute coldness radiating from him was far more terrifying than any rage.
He reached down, picked up the metal briefcase containing the dock deeds, and handed it to Marco.
“Take Matteo Rossi into federal custody,” Luca commanded Marco smoothly. “Hand his wiretap recordings directly to the State Prosecutor. As for Miss Vanessa...”

Luca turned his gray eyes onto his former fiancée, his voice dropping into a register that sounded like a death sentence.
“Cancel the wedding,” Luca said flatly. “And strip her of every cent, every piece of jewelry, and every property carrying the Moretti name.”
