Chapter 11 - Everyone Thought the Busboy Khloe Once Protected Had Become Belladonna’s New Leader—Until Tommy Revealed Who Had Been Using Him for Years

Enzo wanted Tommy found.
Khloe wanted him asked.
They compromised.
Frankie found him.
Khloe asked.
Tommy sat inside the Bennett Language Access Project conference room, shaking.
He was twenty-four now.
Hospitality-management student.
Former Onyx Room employee.
The frightened nineteen-year-old Khloe had once defended from Sal seemed long gone.
Until she said:
“Tommy, look at me.”
Then he did.
And she saw him again.
Scared.
Cornered.
Young.
“I didn't kill Vale.”
“I believe you.”
Enzo looked at her.
Tommy did too.
“Why?”
“Because if you did, you'd have left town.”
Tommy swallowed.
“I was told to attend the wedding.”
“By who?”
“My father.”
Silence.
Khloe had never heard Tommy mention him.
“Name?”
“David Kim.”
Rachel's husband.
Rachel went white.
Tommy continued.
“My mother had me before they married. He never publicly acknowledged me.”
Rachel whispered:
“David has a son?”
Tommy nodded.
“He paid my tuition.”
“Why work at the Onyx Room?”
“He told me to.”
Khloe's stomach turned.
Tommy hadn't randomly been there the night she broke her invisibility.
He had been placed.
“Why?”
“To watch Enzo.”
Enzo stared.
“At nineteen?”
“He said nobody notices busboys.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
Invisible.
Again.
“What did you report?”
“Meetings. Names. Languages.”
“Did you know why?”
“No.”
“When did you learn?”
“After Anthony's arrest.”
Tommy started crying.
“My father told me I helped destroy dangerous men.”
“You did,” Khloe said.
“Not intentionally.”
“Intent isn't the only thing that matters.”
Enzo looked at her.
She knew what he was thinking.
That sentence applied to all of them.
Tommy revealed David had been Belladonna's financial architect for fifteen years.
Vale was public protection.
David controlled data.
Accounts.
Surveillance.
And he had killed Vale because the judge wanted to surrender after Anthony's fall.
“Where is David?” Rachel asked.
Tommy looked at her.
“He wants Elena.”
“Why?”
“He thinks Isabella will name her successor.”
Khloe shook her head.
“Isabella doesn't want a successor.”
Tommy stared.
“What?”
“She wants Belladonna destroyed.”
“That doesn't make sense.”
“It doesn't have to.”
Then Elena disappeared.
From federal protective custody.
No forced entry.
No struggle.
She left voluntarily after receiving a message supposedly from Gabriella.
Fake.
David had her.
He demanded Khloe bring Isabella's folder.
Location:
The old Onyx Room.
Again.
Enzo stared at the address.
“I'm beginning to hate symbolism.”
Khloe replied:
“You hated that building already.”
“More.”
The rescue plan was different this time.
No hidden army.
No manipulated drive.
No pretending they could predict everything.
Rachel insisted on participating.
Khloe hesitated.
Rachel noticed.
“You don't trust me.”
“I trust you.”
“Not completely.”
“No.”
Rachel nodded.
“Fair.”
That was adulthood too.
Trust wasn't binary.
They entered the Onyx Room at midnight.
Dust covered the tables.
The bar remained.
Table Twelve.
Khloe remembered forty-two dollars.
Sal.
Tommy.
Sicilian.
Enzo's eyes on her.
Everything had begun here.
David stood behind the bar.
Elena sat nearby.
Untied.
Confused.
Tommy beside Khloe.
Rachel stopped.
“David.”
Her husband smiled.
“Rachel.”
“Why?”
“Because your career was useful.”
She flinched.
“You married me for access?”
“Initially.”
That word hurt more.
Rachel's face broke.
“Initially?”
“I did love you.”
“Don't.”
David looked at Tommy.
“And you.”
Tommy stepped backward.
“You told me I was helping.”
“You were.”
“No.”
“You gave me Enzo's movements.”
Tommy looked sick.
Khloe moved slightly closer to him.
David laughed.
“There she is.”
“What?”
“The waitress who adopts broken men.”
Enzo's face changed.
Khloe answered before he could.
“I don't adopt anyone.”
“No?”
“No. I stand beside people while they decide what to become.”
David smiled.
“Very inspirational.”
“Thank you.”
“You think Enzo changed?”
“Yes.”
“Men like him don't change.”
Enzo spoke.
“Some do.”
David pointed a gun.
Enzo stopped.
Elena screamed.
Then David said:
“Tell her, Enzo.”
“Tell her what?”
“What you did six months after prison.”
Khloe looked at Enzo.
He went still.
That frightened her more than the gun.
“Enzo?”
David smiled.
“He didn't tell you.”
“Tell me what?”
Enzo looked at Khloe.
“I met David.”
Silence.
“When?”
“Six months after release.”
“Why?”
“He contacted me.”
“What did he want?”
“Information about Anthony's remaining accounts.”
“And?”
“I gave him some.”
Khloe felt the floor shift.
“You worked with him?”
“I thought he was federal.”
David laughed.
Enzo continued.
“I discovered later he wasn't.”
“And you didn't tell me?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I was ashamed.”
There it was.
The old problem.
Secrets dressed as protection.
Khloe's face changed.
Enzo saw.
“Khloe—”
“Not now.”
David laughed.
“Beautiful.”
Then Elena moved.
She grabbed a glass.
Threw it.
David flinched.
Rachel tackled him.
Gunfire exploded.
Enzo pulled Khloe down.
Tommy dragged Elena behind the bar.
Federal agents stormed.
David was arrested.
Alive.
Rachel sat on the floor afterward.
Wedding ring in her palm.
Tommy beside her.
Neither spoke.
Khloe walked outside.
Enzo followed.
“Khloe.”
She stopped.
“Six months.”
“I know.”
“You hid it for years.”
“Yes.”
“You let me marry you without telling me.”
His face collapsed.
“Yes.”
She turned.
Their wedding still hadn't happened.
They had been interrupted.
Technically still engaged.
But now that felt irrelevant.
“You learned so much about consent.”
“I know.”
“You learned to ask.”
“I know.”
“But you still decide which truths I get.”
He closed his eyes.
“I was afraid.”
Khloe laughed sadly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
“I don't expect it to excuse me.”
“Good.”
“What happens now?”
“I don't know.”
He nodded.
And for the second time in their relationship, Khloe asked for space.
This time Enzo knew exactly what to do.
May you like
He gave it.
