Chapter 13 - Enzo Thought Khloe Was Finally Ready to Marry Him—Then a Hospital Call Forced Them to Face a Future Neither Had Planned

The phone rang at 2:14 a.m.
Khloe answered.
Sofia had collapsed.
They reached the hospital within twenty minutes.
Stroke.
Minor, doctors said.
Khloe hated the word minor.
Sofia recovered speech quickly.
Movement took longer.
Khloe sat beside her.
Enzo stayed outside until invited.
Important distinction.
When Sofia woke fully, she looked at Khloe.
“Did I die?”
“No.”
“Disappointing.”
“Mom.”
“Joke.”
“You're terrible at those.”
Sofia smiled weakly.
Then saw Enzo through the glass.
“Why is he outside?”
“He's waiting.”
“For what?”
“Permission.”
Sofia laughed.
“Trainable.”
Khloe invited him in.
Recovery took months.
Khloe reduced work hours.
Enzo helped when asked.
Not before.
One afternoon Sofia struggled with a walker.
Enzo reached forward automatically.
Stopped.
“Want help?”
Sofia glared.
“No.”
“Okay.”
She took two steps.
Nearly fell.
“Now.”
He caught her.
Sofia muttered:
“Annoying.”
Enzo smiled.
“Family trait.”
During recovery, Khloe found an old box among Sofia's belongings.
Inside were photographs.
Daniel.
Sofia.
Baby Khloe.
And one letter.
Daniel's handwriting.
FOR KHLOE WHEN SHE'S READY TO BUILD HER OWN FAMILY.
Khloe sat down.
She opened it.
Daniel wrote about fear.
About how becoming a parent made him understand why Sofia wanted to hide.
But also why hiding forever would damage Khloe.
He hoped Sofia would tell her eventually.
She hadn't.
Then:
If you have children, don't promise them a life without danger. You can't. Promise them truth appropriate to their age, and enough love that they know questions are allowed.
Khloe cried.
Enzo found her.
Stopped in doorway.
“Want company?”
“Yes.”
He sat.
She handed him the letter.
After reading, he remained quiet.
Then Khloe said:
“I want children.”
Enzo froze.
They had discussed it vaguely.
Someday.
Maybe.
Never concretely.
“You do?”
“Yes.”
“With me?”
She stared.
“No, Enzo. The mailman.”
“Fair.”
She smiled.
“Yes. With you.”
His eyes filled.
“But I'm scared.”
“Me too.”
“Of what?”
He looked at Daniel's letter.
“Becoming my father before he changed.”
Khloe took his hand.
“You're allowed to be afraid.”
“I know.”
“You're not allowed to make decisions for imaginary children because of that fear.”
“I know.”
“Good.”
Three weeks later, Enzo proposed again.
Not with the old ring.
Khloe noticed immediately.
“Where is it?”
“In the safe.”
“Why?”
“That ring belonged to the first proposal.”
She smiled.
He held a simple band.
No enormous diamond.
No dessert.
No choking hazard.
“Khloe Bennett.”
“Yes?”
“I know now that marriage isn't permission to stop asking.”
Her eyes filled.
“I know love isn't complete information automatically.”
He took a breath.
“And I know shame becomes dishonesty when I use it to decide what truth you can handle.”
Khloe began crying.
“Still not very romantic.”
“I'm trying.”
“You're doing okay.”
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
“Will you marry me?”
She looked at him.
Then held out her hand.
“Yes.”
The second wedding date was chosen six months later.
Same venue?
Absolutely not.
Khloe refused.
“Bad energy.”
Enzo agreed.
They chose the Bennett Center.
The former Onyx Room.
The place where they first met.
Frankie called this “psychologically concerning.”
Khloe called it reclamation.
The morning of the wedding, Enzo received one message.
Unknown number.
His old instincts flared.
He opened it.
A photograph.
Anthony.
Antonio.
Isabella.
Young.
At a table.
Underneath:
THE LAST SECRET DIES TODAY.
Enzo stared.
Then did something the old Enzo never would have done.
He walked directly to Khloe.
Before the ceremony.
Showed her.
No hiding.
No protection through ignorance.
Khloe read it.
Looked at him.
“Thank you.”
“For ruining your morning?”
“For telling me.”
They called Rachel.
Investigated.
The message came from an automated account Isabella had scheduled before her death.
No threat.
Just a final file release.
The photograph was attached to Antonio's original peace agreement.
Signed by all three.
Antonio.
Isabella.
Anthony.
Proof that once, even the people who later destroyed one another had tried to choose something different.
Khloe looked at it.
“People aren't one thing.”
“No.”
“Doesn't erase what they became.”
“No.”
“But it matters.”
“Yes.”
Enzo took her hand.
“Still want to marry me?”
Khloe smiled.
“Ask me after I put on the dress.”
At four o'clock, Khloe walked down the aisle with Sofia.
Not because tradition required it.
Because she wanted to.
Enzo waited.
No criminals.
No surveillance.
No countdown.
No hidden gun.
Just people.
At the altar, he held out his hand.
And waited.
Khloe placed hers in it.
May you like
The wedding finally began.
