Chapter 12 - Khloe Took Off Her Engagement Ring—And Enzo Finally Faced the One Habit Prison Had Never Taught Him to Break

Khloe didn't end the engagement.
She removed the ring.
There was a difference.
Enzo understood that.
Barely.
He moved into Frankie's guest room.
Frankie hated this arrangement.
“You snore.”
“I don't.”
“You do.”
“Record it.”
“I did.”
Enzo stared.
Frankie played audio.
Enzo looked betrayed.
“That could be anyone.”
“You said my name in your sleep.”
“Delete it.”
“No.”
Normal problems.
Enzo almost appreciated them.
Khloe spent three weeks alone.
Not truly alone.
Sofia visited.
Gabriella called.
Tommy came by.
Rachel apologized despite having nothing to apologize for.
Enzo did not appear.
No flowers.
No cars.
No guards.
No dramatic letters.
On day twenty-two, Khloe texted:
COFFEE?
Enzo replied:
WHEN?
SATURDAY.
WHERE?
MY PLACE.
He arrived at 10:01.
“One minute late.”
“Traffic.”
“Excuses.”
She almost smiled.
They sat.
Khloe placed the ring between them.
Enzo didn't touch it.
“I love you,” she said.
“I love you too.”
“That's not enough.”
“I know.”
“You keep secrets when you're ashamed.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He thought.
Then answered truthfully.
“Because if you know everything, you might leave.”
Khloe nodded.
“So you remove my ability to choose with complete information.”
“Yes.”
“Which is control.”
“Yes.”
“Even when you're not trying to control me.”
“Yes.”
He looked destroyed.
Khloe continued.
“I don't need perfection.”
“I know.”
“I need access to reality.”
“I understand.”
“No.”
She leaned forward.
“I don't think you do yet.”
Enzo waited.
“My father told my mother he wouldn't marry a lie.”
Enzo remembered.
“Yes.”
“I can't either.”
Silence.
Then Enzo did something difficult.
He told her everything.
Every hidden meeting.
Every fear.
Every moment since prison when he had been tempted to use old contacts.
Every time he had quietly asked Frankie for information about threats.
Every financial account.
Every remaining connection.
No dramatic justification.
No editing.
Khloe listened.
Some truths hurt.
Some irritated her.
Some were boring.
That mattered too.
At the end, Enzo said:
“That's everything.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“What about the Porsche?”
He blinked.
“What Porsche?”
“The one Frankie says you bought and hid because you thought I'd call it a midlife crisis.”
Enzo stared.
“You talked to Frankie?”
“Obviously.”
He sighed.
“Yes. There's a Porsche.”
“Ridiculous.”
“I like it.”
“Fine.”
“You're not angry?”
“About the car? No.”
“I spent too much.”
“Your money.”
Enzo laughed unexpectedly.
Then Khloe picked up the ring.
His breathing stopped.
She did not put it on.
She placed it in his hand.
“Ask me again someday.”
He closed his fingers around it.
“Someday?”
“When we're ready.”
“I thought we were.”
“So did I.”
That hurt.
But he nodded.
“Okay.”
Six months passed.
David Kim's testimony exposed the remaining Belladonna network.
Isabella surrendered voluntarily.
At ninety-one.
She insisted on walking into federal court without assistance.
Khloe watched from the gallery.
Isabella looked at her once.
Smiled.
No apology.
Typical.
Elena moved in with Gabriella.
Rachel divorced David.
Tommy testified and received immunity for unwitting assistance.
Frankie finally convinced Enzo to leave his guest room.
Enzo rented a small apartment.
No security cameras outside Khloe's building.
No tracking.
No secret calls.
He and Khloe continued therapy separately.
Then together.
One rainy evening, Khloe came to his apartment.
He was cooking.
Badly.
Smoke alarm screamed.
She opened the door.
“What died?”
“Dinner.”
“Obviously.”
He waved a towel.
Khloe laughed.
They ordered pizza.
Sitting on the floor, she noticed a box.
Wedding decorations.
Still unopened.
“You kept them.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“They're yours too.”
Khloe looked at him.
“You could've thrown them away.”
“Wasn't my decision.”
There.
That tiny sentence.
That was change.
Not prison.
Not speeches.
Not grand gestures.
A box he didn't throw away because half of it belonged to someone else.
Khloe kissed him.
He froze.
Then kissed her back.
When they separated, Enzo whispered:
“What does that mean?”
“It means I wanted to kiss you.”
“Nothing else?”
“Not tonight.”
He smiled.
“Okay.”
Three months later, Isabella Caruso died in federal medical custody.
Natural causes.
Her attorney delivered one final letter to Khloe.
It contained only two sentences:
You were right. I made Sofia afraid, and she became strong anyway.
Do better with whatever comes after us.
Khloe cried.
Not because she loved Isabella.
She didn't.
Because sometimes acknowledgment arrived too late to repair anything.
But it still mattered.
She showed Enzo.
He read it.
Then returned it.
No interpretation.
No lesson.
Just presence.
That night Khloe asked:
“Do you still have the ring?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Safe.”
“Of course.”
“Why?”
“Curious.”
He stared.
She smiled.
“Good night, Enzo.”
He groaned.
“You're cruel.”
“Growth opportunity.”
And for the first time since the interrupted wedding, Enzo believed there might truly be another one.
Not because the past had disappeared.
May you like
Because they were finally learning not to hide it.
